South Alabama Rallies Past Florida Atlantic in Women’s Basketball
MOBILE, Ala. (Interstat) — A dominant third-quarter surge propelled the South Alabama Jaguars to a 70-63 victory over the Florida Atlantic Owls in a non-conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at the Mitchell Center.
In a contest defined by turnovers and defensive pressure, the Jaguars outscored the Owls 25-15 in the pivotal third period to seize control, turning a 30-28 halftime deficit into a 55-45 lead heading into the final quarter. The Owls mounted a late comeback attempt but could never close the gap completely.
The game was a sloppy affair from the outset, with both teams struggling to maintain possession. Florida Atlantic committed 26 turnovers, while South Alabama was scarcely better with 25. The Jaguars, however, capitalized more effectively on these mistakes, scoring 29 points off turnovers compared to 20 for the Owls.
South Alabama’s offense found its rhythm in the third quarter, shooting efficiently from the floor and the free-throw line to build its decisive advantage. The Jaguars finished the game shooting 22 for 53 from the field, while Florida Atlantic was held to 17 for 44. Both teams connected on five 3-pointers.
Amyah Sutton led a balanced South Alabama scoring attack with 14 points. Chrysta Narcisse provided a significant spark off the bench, contributing 12 points, while Daniela Gonzalez and Diawna Carter-Hartley each added 11 points. Gonzalez also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for a double-double.
For Florida Atlantic, Vivian Onugha was a force inside, scoring a game-high 17 points. Jess Moors added 11 points, and Destyne Jackson and Michiyah Simmons each chipped in 10 points. The Owls were aggressive in drawing fouls, attempting 29 free throws and making 24, but it was not enough to overcome their offensive struggles from the field and their ball-handling issues.
The first half was a back-and-forth struggle. Florida Atlantic held a narrow 16-15 lead after one quarter and managed to extend it to two points by halftime despite both teams combining for 31 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.
With the win, South Alabama improved its season record to 4-1. The Jaguars will look to continue their momentum when they host Kennesaw State on Tuesday.
Florida Atlantic fell to 2-2 with the loss. The Owls return home to face the University of Florida on Monday.
