Virginia Tech women roll past Niagara for 5th straight win

BLACKSBURG, Va. (Interstat) — The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team delivered a commanding performance Thursday night, overwhelming the visiting Niagara Purple Eagles from the opening tip and cruising to an 83-46 victory at a lively Cassell Coliseum.

The Hokies, continuing their strong start to the season, improved to 5-0, while Niagara remained winless, falling to 0-4.

Virginia Tech’s dominance was established early, fueled by a stifling defense that generated turnovers and converted them into easy baskets. The Hokies opened the game on a 9-0 run, a stretch that included a steal by Kilah Freelon leading to a Mackenzie Nelson jump shot for the first points of the contest. The first quarter set the tone, with Virginia Tech building a 23-10 lead.

The second quarter was more of the same, as the Hokies extended their advantage with a 28-point period. Their defensive pressure was relentless, forcing the Purple Eagles into difficult shots and costly mistakes. By halftime, the lead had ballooned to 51-20, effectively putting the game out of reach.

Virginia Tech’s offensive execution was efficient throughout. The Hokies shot 50.8 percent from the floor and capitalized on their opportunities in the paint, outscoring Niagara 48-22 near the basket. They also scored 25 points off of 20 Niagara turnovers, showcasing their ability to turn defense into instant offense.

The Hokies shared the scoring load, with seven players scoring at least nine points. Mackenzie Nelson, a 5-foot-8 guard from Greenwich, Connecticut, orchestrated the offense with a team-high seven assists to go with her 10 points. Kilah Freelon, a 6-foot-1 forward from Denver, Colorado, was a force inside, posting a double-double with 12 points and controlling the glass.

Samyha Suffren and Mel Daley each added 13 points, while Carys Baker chipped in 10. Carleigh Wenzel filled the stat sheet with nine points, three assists, and a block.

For Niagara, the offensive struggles were pronounced. The Purple Eagles shot just 35.2 percent from the field and a meager 16.7 percent from three-point range. They managed only seven assists against 20 turnovers, highlighting the difficulty they had against Virginia Tech’s defensive schemes.

Tyasia Freeman, a 6-foot-2 forward from Waynesboro, Georgia, was a bright spot for the Purple Eagles, leading all scorers with 13 points. Caliana Fenceroy, a 5-foot-5 guard from Omaha, Nebraska, dished out a team-high four assists.

The second half saw Virginia Tech maintain its large lead, never allowing Niagara to mount any significant challenge. The Hokies outscored the Purple Eagles 32-26 after halftime, with the result never in doubt.

The victory was a comprehensive team effort for Virginia Tech, which also held advantages in rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks. The announced attendance of 4,099 witnessed a Hokies team that has now won its first five games by an average of over 28 points.

Niagara will look for its first win of the season on the road Saturday against Radford. Virginia Tech, meanwhile, prepares for a stiffer test, traveling to face James Madison on Sunday.
