Cleveland State Vikings Dominate Akron Zips in Women’s Basketball Matchup

CLEVELAND (Interstat) — In a game defined by suffocating defense and a cascade of turnovers, the Cleveland State Vikings remained undefeated with a commanding 76-55 victory over the visiting Akron Zips in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Sunday at Wolstein Center.

The Vikings improved to 4-0 on the young season, while the Zips’ struggles continued, dropping them to 0-4.

Cleveland State’s victory was engineered on the defensive end, where they forced Akron into 28 turnovers, converting those miscues into a decisive 34 points. The Vikings also capitalized on their opportunities at the free-throw line, making 21 of 30 attempts, while their offense consistently found high-percentage shots, outscoring Akron 38-18 in the paint.

The tone was set early and decisively. Cleveland State erupted for 22 points in the first quarter, overwhelming an Akron offense that managed just five points in the period. The Vikings’ defensive pressure was relentless from the opening tip, creating a deficit from which the Zips would never recover.

Akron showed a flicker of life in the second quarter, outscoring Cleveland State 21-16 behind improved shooting, but they still trailed 38-26 at halftime. Any momentum the Zips carried into the break was quickly extinguished as the Vikings reasserted their dominance after halftime, stretching their lead and cruising to the finish.

Jada Leonard of Cleveland State was the standout performer, leading all scorers with 27 points in 32 minutes of action. The guard from the Bronx, New York, was a catalyst on both ends, adding three rebounds, two assists and a game-high five steals, consistently disrupting Akron’s offensive flow.

She was complemented superbly by forward Ayisse Magassa, who recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Paris, France native also contributed a block and was a persistent force inside for the Vikings. Other key contributors for the home team included Colbi Maples with 10 points, Madison Royal-Davis who filled the stat sheet with six points, eight rebounds and three assists, and Izabella Zingaro who added eight points.

For Akron, Keiryn McGuff was a bright spot, leading her team with 15 points and six rebounds. The forward from Dublin, Ohio, battled throughout her 32 minutes on the court. Ni’Rah Clark added nine points and four rebounds for the Zips, while Shaena Brew contributed five points, six rebounds and four assists.

The statistical disparity told the story of the game. While Akron actually won the battle on the offensive glass, 15-10, their offensive execution was crippled by the turnover count. Cleveland State also dished out 16 assists to Akron’s 10 and matched their 10 steals. The Vikings’ offensive efficiency was starkly higher, scoring 76 points on 76 possessions compared to Akron’s 55 points on 77 trips down the floor.

The game was played before an announced attendance of 303. Cleveland State will look to maintain its perfect record when it travels to face Northwestern on Friday. Akron, still in search of its first win, returns home to host Binghamton on Thursday.
