Niagara at Kent State

KENT, Ohio (Interstat) — The Kent State women’s basketball team delivered a commanding performance Sunday afternoon, overwhelming the visiting Niagara Purple Eagles 92-45 at the Memorial Athletics Center.

The Golden Flashes seized control from the opening tip, outscoring Niagara 31-14 in the first quarter and never looked back. Their offensive efficiency was starkly contrasted by Niagara’s struggles, as Kent State built a 56-23 lead by halftime and cruised to the victory in front of a crowd of 1,176.

Janae Tyler led all scorers with 24 points for Kent State, demonstrating a dominant inside presence. Dionna Gray orchestrated the offense masterfully, recording a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists. The Golden Flashes also received significant contributions from Rylee Kalocay, Mya Babbitt, and Corynne Hauser, who each added 10 points. Hauser and Kalocay also chipped in five and three assists, respectively.

Niagara, which fell to 0-3 on the young season, was led by Chasity Wilson’s 13 points and five assists. The Purple Eagles, however, were plagued by 20 turnovers and frigid shooting, connecting on just 17 of 59 field goal attempts for a 28.8 percent success rate.

Kent State’s offense operated with precision, shooting 51.6 percent from the floor (32 of 62) and an impressive 57.1 percent from beyond the arc (8 of 14). The Golden Flashes also capitalized at the free-throw line, making 20 of 25 attempts. Defensively, Kent State forced those 20 Niagara turnovers, converting them into 28 points, and also outscored the Purple Eagles 44-16 in the paint.

The victory improves Kent State’s record to 3-2 as they prepare for a road test against Ohio State on Wednesday. Niagara, still in search of its first win, continues a challenging road stretch at Virginia Tech on Thursday.
