South Alabama at UAB
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Interstat) — The South Alabama women’s basketball team delivered a stunning offensive performance, routing UAB 91-68 on Saturday afternoon at Bartow Arena in a non-conference matchup.
The Jaguars improved to 2-0 on the young season, while the Blazers fell to 0-2.
South Alabama seized control of the game with a dominant second half, outscoring UAB 50-29 after the intermission. The teams were knotted at 41-41 at halftime, but the Jaguars exploded in the third quarter, outscoring the Blazers 21-13, and then poured in 29 points in the final period to put the game out of reach.
The victory was fueled by an exceptionally efficient offensive display from South Alabama. The Jaguars shot 53% from the field and a blistering 57.7% from three-point range, connecting on 15 of 26 attempts from beyond the arc. Their offensive rating of 122.7 points per 100 possessions dwarfed UAB’s mark of 93.0.
Daniela Gonzalez, a 6-foot guard from Jamundi, Colombia, orchestrated the South Alabama attack, finishing with 12 points, six rebounds and a game-high seven assists in 33 minutes.
UAB was led by Sofia Munoz, who scored a team-high 20 points. Eleecia Carter added 14 points and five assists, and Riley Talbert contributed nine points and eight rebounds for the Blazers.
Despite the lopsided final score, the game was competitive early. The first quarter ended in a 21-21 tie, and UAB stayed within striking distance throughout the second period. The Blazers’ offense, however, could not keep pace with South Alabama’s torrid shooting in the second half.
South Alabama capitalized on UAB’s mistakes, scoring 27 points off 17 Blazer turnovers. The Jaguars also controlled the interior, outscoring UAB 32-22 in the paint.
The result was an upset according to pregame analytics, as Interstat’s ELO system had projected UAB with a 93.80 percent probability to win.
South Alabama will look to continue its strong start when it hosts Memphis on Tuesday. UAB will seek its first win of the season when it welcomes Alabama A&M on Wednesday.
