Manhattan at Minnesota
MINNEAPOLIS (Interstat) — The Minnesota Golden Gophers delivered a dominant, wire-to-wire victory over the Manhattan Lady Jaspers, 99-36, in a non-conference women’s basketball game at Williams Arena on Friday night.
From the opening tip, Minnesota’s defense set the tone, forcing 23 Manhattan turnovers and converting them into 24 points. The Golden Gophers’ offense was equally efficient, shooting 51.6 percent from the floor and a blistering 52.4 percent from three-point range, making 11 of 21 attempts. In stark contrast, the Lady Jaspers failed to connect from beyond the arc, going 0 for 6, and shot just 30 percent overall from the field.
The game was effectively decided by halftime. Minnesota built a 42-20 lead by the break, then erupted for 30 points in the third quarter to put the contest completely out of reach. The Golden Gophers’ ball movement and defensive pressure were overwhelming, as they tallied 12 assists and 12 steals compared to Manhattan’s six assists and six steals.
Mara Braun led a balanced Minnesota scoring attack with 17 points. Tori McKinney added 16 points, while Sophie Hart and Grace Grocholski chipped in 13 and 12 points, respectively. Grocholski filled the stat sheet, narrowly missing a triple-double with eight rebounds and seven assists.
For Manhattan, which fell to 0-2 on the young season, Kristina Juric was the lone bright spot, scoring 12 points. The Lady Jaspers struggled to find any offensive rhythm against the swarming Minnesota defense, scoring exactly 10 points in each of the first three quarters before being held to just six in the final period.
Minnesota, which improved to 2-0, also controlled the glass, out-rebounding Manhattan 40-28 and scoring 36 points in the paint. A crowd of 2,904 watched the Golden Gophers secure their second lopsided victory of the week.
