Schissler Leads North Texas to Decisive Victory Over UTSA

DENTON, Texas (Interstat) — Andi Schissler scored 22 points and North Texas used a dominant first half to cruise past Texas-San Antonio 87-63 in an American Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Tuesday night at North Texas Coliseum.

The Mean Green (16-10, 8-5 AAC) avenged a two-point loss to the Roadrunners from earlier this season, taking control from the opening tip and never trailing before an announced crowd of 1,810.

North Texas built a commanding 48-27 halftime lead by shooting efficiently and capitalizing on a sluggish start from the visitors. The Mean Green opened the game on a 16-3 run, fueled by early three-pointers from Schissler and Chania Price. Texas-San Antonio (12-14, 5-8) struggled to find offensive rhythm, committing eight turnovers in the first quarter alone while North Texas shot 10 of 18 from the field in the period to take a 25-11 lead.

The second quarter offered more of the same, as North Texas extended its lead to 21 points by the break. Schissler, a 5-foot-6 guard from Kersey, Colorado, led all scorers in the half with 13 points, including three shots from beyond the arc. The Mean Green defense held UTSA to 10-of-30 shooting in the half.

The most important stretch of the game came late in the first quarter and early in the second, when North Texas effectively put the game out of reach. After UTSA’s Cheyenne Rowe scored to cut the deficit to 9-5, the Mean Green responded with a 13-2 burst. The run featured a driving layup from Tionna Lidge, a three-pointer from Schissler, and capped with a buzzer-beating three from Schissler to end the first quarter, pushing the lead to 25-11. North Texas then scored the first five points of the second quarter, extending the run to 18-2 and establishing a 30-11 advantage from which the Roadrunners could not recover.

Texas-San Antonio showed more life after halftime, scoring 36 points in the second half, but could never cut the deficit below 16 points. Ereauna Hardaway led the Roadrunners with 19 points and three assists in 26 minutes. Cheyenne Rowe, a 6-2 forward from Ajax, Canada, added 12 points and four blocked shots.

North Texas, however, maintained its offensive balance and pressure. Price finished with 14 points, while Aysia Proctor and Mekhia Chase each contributed 12. The Mean Green shared the ball effectively, registering 18 assists on 32 made field goals and outscoring UTSA 21-6 in points off turnovers.

The Roadrunners were led defensively by Rowe’s four blocks, but the team was hampered by 18 total turnovers, which North Texas converted into easy scoring opportunities. UTSA’s Adriana Robles scored eight points off the bench.

The victory gives North Texas a season split with Texas-San Antonio, after the Roadrunners won the first meeting 66-64 on Jan. 28 in San Antonio. It also keeps the Mean Green in the upper tier of the AAC standings as the regular season enters its final weeks.

Interstat’s ELO system had projected North Texas with a 72.80 percent probability to win, a forecast borne out by the lopsided performance.

Texas-San Antonio, which has lost three of its last four games, will look to regroup at home against Memphis on Sunday. North Texas, winners of three of its last four, hosts South Florida on Saturday.
