Toledo Holds Off Massachusetts for Road Win
HADLEY, Mass. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by tenacity and timely shot-making, the Toledo Rockets weathered a second-half surge from the Massachusetts Minutewomen to secure a 60-52 victory in a non-conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night at the Mullins Center.
The Rockets, improving to 14-10, built an early lead and held off multiple comeback attempts by the Minutewomen, who fell to 18-6. The game, organized by the Mid-American Conference, drew an attendance of 945.
The most critical phase of the contest came late in the fourth quarter. After seeing a once-comfortable lead dwindle, Toledo clung to a precarious advantage as Massachusetts applied intense defensive pressure. With the Rockets leading by just four points and under a minute remaining, the Minutewomen had several opportunities to cut the deficit to a single possession. However, a key block by Toledo’s Evalyse Cole on a Lilly Ferguson jump shot with 1:23 left preserved the margin. Toledo then executed in the final minute, with Miriam Diala converting a crucial layup off an assist from Ella Weaver to push the lead back to six points with 43 seconds remaining, effectively sealing the outcome.
Toledo guard Patricia Anumgba led all scorers with 22 points, including three 3-pointers, adding two steals in 32 minutes. Her performance continued a strong stretch for the junior from Silver Spring, Maryland, who has averaged over 18 points per game in her last four outings. For Massachusetts, forward Megan Olbrys of Norwood, Massachusetts, countered with 20 points and nine rebounds in 37 minutes. Guard Allie Palmieri contributed 12 points and four assists for the Minutewomen.
The Rockets established control from the opening tip, leveraging a disruptive defensive effort to force nine first-quarter turnovers. Toledo closed the first period on a 7-2 run, capped by a Kendall Carruthers 3-pointer, to take a 14-10 lead. They extended that margin to 26-19 by halftime, holding Massachusetts to just nine points in the second quarter on 26% shooting from the floor.
Massachusetts emerged from the locker room with renewed energy, opening the third quarter on a 13-4 run to briefly take a 32-30 lead, their first of the game, fueled by Olbrys and Yahmani McKayle. The teams traded blows throughout the period, with the Minutewomen tying the game at 36-36 on a last-second jumper by Aiyanna Perkins. Toledo answered decisively at the start of the fourth, scoring the first six points to regain a lead they would not relinquish, despite Massachusetts pulling within two possessions on multiple occasions.
The Minutewomen won the battle inside, outscoring Toledo 26-22 in the paint and converting 19 points off 18 Rocket turnovers, compared to 12 points off 14 turnovers for Toledo. Massachusetts also held a 44-33 rebounding advantage. However, Toledo’s ability to hit from the perimeter, led by Anumgba, and their clutch defensive stops in the final two minutes proved the difference.
For Toledo, Carruthers added 10 points, while Diala chipped in six points, five rebounds and two assists. McKayle finished with 12 points for Massachusetts, and Chinenye Odenigbo anchored the defense with four blocks and four steals.
The win marked a significant road victory for Toledo against a Massachusetts team that entered the game with a 63.6% probability to win according to Interstat’s ELO system. The Rockets will look to build on the momentum Saturday when they visit Bowling Green. Massachusetts aims to rebound on the road at Central Michigan, also on Saturday.
