Vanderbilt’s Hot Start Buries Oklahoma in SEC Women’s Basketball Showdown
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a showcase of offensive firepower between two of the Southeastern Conference’s top teams, Vanderbilt rode a dominant first-half performance and a career night from Mikayla Blakes to a decisive 102-86 victory over Oklahoma on Monday night at Memorial Gymnasium.
The Commodores, improving to 23-2 overall, established control early and never relinquished it, overwhelming the Sooners with a 59-point first half. Vanderbilt’s backcourt duo of Blakes and Aubrey Galvan proved unstoppable, combining for 64 points on a night where the team shot a blistering percentage from the field.
Blakes, a guard from Somerset, New Jersey, was the catalyst, finishing with 34 points and six assists in 36 minutes. Her performance continued a remarkable stretch of scoring, following games of 37, 30, and 29 points in her last three outings. Galvan, a sophomore from Deerfield, Illinois, added 30 points, her scoring prowess complementing Blakes perfectly. Justine Pissott provided a crucial outside threat with 16 points, while Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda contributed 13 points and strong interior defense.
Oklahoma, which fell to 17-6, found itself in a deep hole from the opening tip. Despite a valiant effort to keep pace, the Sooners could not overcome Vanderbilt’s explosive start, which saw the Commodores lead 31-19 after the first quarter and extend that advantage to 59-40 by halftime.
The Sooners were led by Raegan Beers with 19 points, though she was limited to 24 minutes due to foul trouble. Sahara Williams added 17 points, while Payton Verhulst and Aaliyah Chavez each scored 14. Brooklyn Stewart provided a defensive presence with four blocks to go with 13 points.
The game’s most critical sequence unfolded in the first quarter, setting the tone for the evening. After Oklahoma’s Verhulst opened the scoring with a three-pointer, Vanderbilt responded with a devastating 17-2 run. The surge was fueled by precise outside shooting and disruptive defense. Pissott and Mwenentanda hit consecutive three-pointers, and Galvan connected on a pair of mid-range jumpers. The Commodores’ defensive pressure forced several early Oklahoma turnovers, converting them into easy transition opportunities. By the time the dust settled on the opening period, Vanderbilt held a 12-point lead, a margin that proved insurmountable for the visiting Sooners.
Oklahoma attempted to rally in the third quarter, outscoring Vanderbilt 28-26 behind more aggressive play from Beers and Williams, but could not cut the deficit to single digits. Every Sooner push was answered by the Commodores, often by Blakes or Galvan with a timely basket to stifle momentum.
Vanderbilt’s offensive efficiency was the story, as they consistently found high-percentage shots and shared the ball effectively, tallying numerous assists on their made field goals. Their defensive effort, particularly in the first half, disrupted Oklahoma’s rhythm and prevented the Sooners from ever establishing their preferred tempo.
The announced attendance was 3,316 at Memorial Gymnasium.
According to Interstat’s ELO system, Vanderbilt entered with a 54.90% probability to win, though Oklahoma had been installed as a narrow 2.5-point favorite pregame. The combined score of 188 points sailed over the posted over/under line of 157.5.
Vanderbilt will look to continue its strong season when it hosts Texas on Thursday. Oklahoma returns home to face Florida on the same night.
