Monmouth at Drexel

PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — A tight Coastal Athletic Association rematch is set for Sunday when the Drexel Dragons host the Monmouth Hawks in women’s basketball at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.

The matchup features two teams jockeying for conference position, with Monmouth at 14-7 overall and Drexel at 13-7. The Dragons won the first meeting 56-53 on Jan. 30 in West Long Branch, New Jersey, a game that underscores the narrow margin expected in the sequel.

Drexel enters on a five-game winning streak, including a 65-56 victory at Northeastern last Sunday. Guard Laine McGurk has been instrumental, averaging 19.5 points over her last two contests. She scored 15 in the win over Monmouth and erupted for 24 points against Northeastern. Amaris Baker, who added 21 points in the Northeastern game, provides a potent backcourt complement.

Monmouth looks to snap a two-game skid after falling 61-51 at Stony Brook. The Hawks will lean on forward Ella Farrelly, who nearly posted a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds in that loss. Her defensive presence, evidenced by multiple blocks in four of her last six games, will be key against Drexel’s scorers. Support from Divine Dibula (15 points vs. Stony Brook) and GiGi Gamble will be crucial for the Hawks’ offense.

The game hinges on whether Monmouth’s defense, anchored by Farrelly, can contain McGurk’s hot hand and generate transition opportunities. Conversely, Drexel aims to protect its home floor and sweep the season series, leveraging the momentum of their current streak.

Tip-off is scheduled for Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia.
