UCLA Holds Off Michigan Rally to Secure Road Victory
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Interstat) — In a heavyweight clash between two of the nation’s premier women’s basketball programs, UCLA leaned on its defensive identity and the towering presence of Lauren Betts to survive a furious fourth-quarter rally from Michigan, escaping a raucous Crisler Center with a 69-66 victory on Sunday.
The game, played before a season-high crowd of 6,108, lived up to its billing as a potential Final Four preview, featuring 13 lead changes and a dramatic final minute. The Bruins, who led by as many as 12 points in the third quarter, saw their advantage whittled down to a single possession in the closing seconds before securing the win.
The most critical sequence unfolded in the final 20 seconds. With UCLA clinging to a 67-66 lead after Michigan’s Olivia Olson nailed a deep three-pointer, the Bruins’ Kiki Rice was fouled and sent to the line. She calmly sank both free throws to push the lead back to three with 14 seconds remaining. Michigan had two chances to tie, but Syla Swords missed a contested three-pointer, and after an offensive rebound, another Swords three-point attempt at the buzzer fell short, allowing UCLA to remain unbeaten in conference play.
UCLA’s victory was anchored in a dominant defensive performance, particularly through three quarters. The Bruins held Michigan to 36.6 percent shooting from the field and just 5 of 21 from three-point range. They also forced 9 turnovers while committing 13 of their own, but limited the Wolverines to only 8 points off those miscues. Crucially, UCLA controlled the paint, outscoring Michigan 46-32 and blocking three shots, all from Betts.
Betts, the 6-foot-7 center from Centennial, Colorado, was the game’s most impactful player. She recorded a monster double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds, adding 5 assists and 3 blocks in 32 minutes. Her defensive presence altered countless Michigan shots inside, and her offensive efficiency provided a steadying force. Guard Kiki Rice led all scorers with 20 points, including several crucial drives and a perfect 4-for-4 performance from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. Gabriela Jaquez added 13 points and Gianna Kneepkens chipped in 12 for the Bruins.
Michigan was led by Olivia Olson, who scored 20 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Guard Mila Holloway facilitated the offense with 15 points and 6 assists, while Te’Yala Delfosse provided a key spark off the bench with 10 points. The Wolverines’ comeback was fueled by a 21-point fourth quarter, during which they shot 50 percent from the field and attacked the basket relentlessly.
The game began at a deliberate pace, with Michigan taking a 17-13 lead after the first quarter. UCLA responded with a 20-point second quarter, sparked by Betts’ interior play and Kneepkens’ outside shooting, to take a 33-30 lead into halftime. The Bruins extended their lead in the third, using a 12-2 run to build a 54-45 advantage heading into the final frame.
UCLA’s offense operated with precision, scoring 69 points on just 70 possessions for an offensive rating of 98.4. Michigan, by contrast, managed 66 points on 74 possessions, an offensive rating of 89.0. The Bruins shot 46.6 percent from the field and made 12 of 15 free throws, while Michigan connected on only 9 of 13 from the line.
With the win, UCLA improves to 22-1 overall and maintains its position atop the Big Ten standings. Michigan falls to 20-4. The Bruins continue their road trip at Michigan State on Wednesday. Michigan will travel to face Northwestern on Thursday.
