Titans Outlast Roadrunners in Double-Overtime Big West Thriller
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Interstat) — In a game defined by relentless momentum swings and a career-defining performance, Cristina Jones willed Cal State Fullerton to a 92-87 double-overtime victory over Cal State Bakersfield in a Big West Conference women’s basketball thriller Saturday night at Icardo Center.
The contest, witnessed by an intimate crowd of 113, evolved from a back-and-forth affair into a personal showcase for Jones, a 5-foot-10 guard from Long Beach. She poured in a game-high 35 points, including 11 in the two overtime periods, to lift the Titans to their third consecutive win.
The game’s most critical sequence arrived in the final minute of the first overtime. With Cal State Fullerton trailing 81-79, Jones drove hard to the basket for a layup to tie the game with 43 seconds remaining. On the ensuing Roadrunners possession, the Titans’ defense forced a missed jumper from Tena Ikidi, but Dae’Jaidence Kincade secured the offensive rebound and putback, giving Bakersfield an 83-81 lead with 12 seconds left.
After a Fullerton timeout, the Titans went inside to Talia Maxwell, whose shot was off the mark. Jana Falsdottir grabbed the offensive board and was fouled by Ikidi with 4.6 seconds on the clock. Falsdottir, who finished with five points, calmly sank both free throws to knot the score at 83 and ultimately force a second overtime.
From there, Jones and the Titans seized control. She opened the second extra period with a pair of free throws, and after a Dylan Swindle three-pointer, Jones added two more from the line to give Fullerton an 89-85 cushion with 1:33 to play. The Roadrunners, despite a valiant effort, could not close the gap, managing only a Maria Dias jumper the rest of the way as the Titans iced the game at the foul line.
The victory improved Cal State Fullerton to 14-9 overall and continued its mid-conference surge. Cal State Bakersfield fell to 7-16.
The regulation finish was equally dramatic. The Titans held a 72-71 lead and had possession with 24 seconds left in the fourth quarter, but a turnover gave Bakersfield a final chance. Chrishawn Coleman was fouled with 2.2 seconds remaining and made the first free throw to tie the game. Her second attempt missed, and a desperation heave from Fullerton was off target, sending the game to the first overtime.
Jones’s monumental effort was supported by key contributions across the roster. Maxwell, a 6-3 forward from Fresno, posted 17 points and two blocks, anchoring the paint. Maddy Tauro provided a vital spark off the bench with 13 points, while Swindle added 12 points and three assists.
Bakersfield was led by Coleman’s 22 points and three assists. Dias, from Lisbon, Portugal, scored 18 points, and Marley Langi added 14. Ikidi, from Nigeria, recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Statistically, the game was a study in contrasting efficiencies. While Bakersfield shot a slightly better percentage from the field (44.4% to 41.2%), Fullerton’s aggression paid dividends at the free-throw line. The Titans attempted 48 free throws, making 34, compared to the Roadrunners’ 18-of-27 performance. Fullerton also capitalized on Bakersfield’s 16 turnovers, converting them into 23 points.
The game featured 16 lead changes and 10 ties, with neither team ever leading by more than nine points. The Titans’ bench outscored Bakersfield’s 26-11, a decisive factor in the marathon contest.
Cal State Fullerton returns home to host Long Beach State on Thursday. Cal State Bakersfield begins a road trip at Hawaii on the same night. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in a rematch at Fullerton on Feb. 21.
