Lady Golden Lions Edge Lady Braves in SWAC Showdown

PINE BLUFF, Ark. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and squandered opportunities, the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Lady Golden Lions edged the Alcorn State Lady Braves 64-60 in a Southwestern Athletic Conference women’s basketball clash Saturday at HPER Complex.

The victory, secured in the final seconds from the free-throw line, improved Arkansas-Pine Bluff to 9-12 overall, while Alcorn State fell to 11-10.

The contest was a stark study in contrasting efficiencies. While both teams struggled from the field — Alcorn State shot 44.4% and Arkansas-Pine Bluff just 37.7% — the Lady Golden Lions maximized their possessions and capitalized on Alcorn State’s mistakes. Arkansas-Pine Bluff posted an offensive rating of 93.3 points per 100 possessions, significantly better than Alcorn State’s 81.4, a disparity fueled by a massive turnover margin.

Alcorn State committed 23 turnovers, which the Lady Golden Lions converted into 13 points. Conversely, Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s more disciplined approach resulted in only 13 turnovers. The Lady Golden Lions also dominated the assist column 15-7 and the steals category 15-7, showcasing a cohesive defensive effort that disrupted Alcorn State’s rhythm all afternoon.

The most important stretch of the game came in the final three minutes with the score knotted at 60. After Alcorn State’s Kiarra Henderson committed a turnover, Arkansas-Pine Bluff’ Jailah Pelly was fouled and calmly sank two free throws with 2:03 remaining to give the Lady Golden Lions a 62-60 lead, their first since the opening quarter. On the ensuing possession, Henderson was called for an offensive foul. Arkansas-Pine Bluff then bled the clock before Indiya Bowen drew a foul with 3 seconds left and sealed the game by making both free throws for the final margin.

Alcorn State was led by a stellar performance from guard Kiarra Henderson. The Fort Worth, Texas, native scored a game-high 20 points, grabbed eight rebounds, dished five assists and blocked a shot in 34 minutes. Nakia Cheatham of Clarksdale, Mississippi, recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Chrishunti Walker added 13 points.

For Arkansas-Pine Bluff, the victory was a collective effort. Chicago native Khaniah Gardner, the team’s top star, controlled the paint with a monstrous 15-rebound performance to go with seven points. Guard Jailah Pelly of St. Louis matched Henderson’s scoring output with 20 points, including three 3-pointers. Indiya Bowen provided crucial late-game composure and finished with 15 points, and Jasmine Davis filled the stat sheet with 12 points and five assists.

The game began with Alcorn State asserting itself early, building a small lead through interior play. They held a 34-28 advantage in points in the paint. However, Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s persistent defensive pressure, particularly from Gardner and the backcourt duo of Pelly and Davis, began to wear down the Lady Braves as the game progressed. A key 9-0 run by the Lady Golden Lions late in the third quarter, fueled by consecutive 3-pointers from Pelly, turned a narrow deficit into a lead they would never fully relinquish.

Alcorn State’s offensive struggles were compounded by poor perimeter shooting, as they connected on only 4 of 19 attempts from beyond the arc. Arkansas-Pine Bluff was only marginally better at 7 of 22, but their ability to generate extra possessions through 13 offensive rebounds and those 15 steals proved decisive.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Alcorn State entered as a significant favorite with a 71.80% probability to win. The Lady Braves had won three of their last four conference games, while Arkansas-Pine Bluff was coming off a home win against Jackson State.

Alcorn State looks to rebound next Thursday when it hosts Florida A&M. Arkansas-Pine Bluff continues its conference schedule on the road Thursday at Alabama A&M. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in the regular-season finale at Alcorn State on March 5.
