Gardner-Webb Edges Winthrop in Big South Women’s Basketball Showdown

SHELBY, N.C. (Interstat) — In a game defined by runs, missed opportunities, and a blistering display of three-point shooting, the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs edged the Winthrop Eagles 72-69 in a Big South Conference women’s basketball clash on Saturday at Paul Porter Arena.

The contest, played before an intimate crowd of 378, saw Gardner-Webb improve to 8-16 overall, while Winthrop fell to 11-14. The victory completed a regular-season sweep for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, who had defeated the Eagles 54-48 on Dec. 31.

The most critical phase of the game unfolded in the final minute, a chaotic sequence that encapsulated the entire afternoon. Trailing 69-67 after Winthrop’s Amourie Porter sank a deep three-pointer with six seconds remaining, Gardner-Webb’s Nyla Walker was fouled on the ensuing inbounds play. The sophomore guard from Frankfort, Illinois, calmly sank both free throws with five seconds left to push the lead to 71-69.

Winthrop, out of timeouts, rushed the ball upcourt. Cori Lard’s desperation three-point attempt from the top of the key as time expired missed everything, sealing the narrow victory for the home team. The frantic finish was a fitting conclusion to a game where neither team led by more than nine points and the outcome remained in doubt until the final buzzer.

Gardner-Webb’s win was fueled almost entirely by its remarkable efficiency from beyond the arc and the free throw line. The Runnin’ Bulldogs connected on 13 of 25 three-point attempts, a 52% clip, and made 17 of 22 free throws. In contrast, Winthrop struggled from deep, hitting just 8 of 28, and left points at the charity stripe, going 11 for 18.

The Eagles dominated the interior, outscoring Gardner-Webb 30-12 in the paint and grabbing 13 offensive rebounds to the Bulldogs’ nine. However, Winthrop’s 20 turnovers, which led to 22 Gardner-Webb points, and its inability to consistently match the home team’s perimeter shooting proved decisive.

Amina Gray of Gardner-Webb was the game’s standout performer. The guard from Dekalb, Illinois, poured in a game-high 27 points, including five three-pointers, and added three rebounds and a steal. Her backcourt mate, Jaelyn Acker of Richfield, Wisconsin, contributed 13 points, all from three-point range, hitting 4 of 9 from deep.

For Winthrop, Amourie Porter of Glen Burnie, Maryland, delivered a heroic individual effort in the losing cause. The 5-foot-10 guard scored 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds, relentlessly attacking the basket to keep the Eagles within striking distance. Mya Pierfax of Lake Elsinore, California, provided a key spark off the bench with 14 points.

The game’s rhythm was established early. Gardner-Webb raced to a 14-7 lead after the first quarter behind precise three-point shooting from Acker and Gray. The Bulldogs extended their advantage in the second period, leading by as many as nine before taking a 38-24 lead into halftime.

Winthrop emerged from the break with renewed vigor, opening the third quarter with a 10-2 run, fueled by consecutive three-pointers from Pierfax, to cut the deficit to six. The Eagles continued to chip away, using their defensive pressure to create transition chances. They finally drew even and briefly took a one-point lead late in the third quarter before Gardner-Webb steadied itself to carry a 53-50 edge into the final frame.

The fourth quarter was a tense, back-and-forth affair featuring five lead changes. Winthrop’s interior play, led by Porter and Persais Williams, who finished with nine points and six rebounds, repeatedly brought them back. But each time the Eagles drew close or took a slim lead, Gardner-Webb answered, usually with a critical three-pointer or a pair of free throws.

Walker, who finished with 11 points and six assists, was instrumental in the closing moments, not only with her clutch free throws but also with her playmaking, setting up several key baskets down the stretch. Gardner-Webb’s Amira Ofunniyin of Cary, North Carolina, controlled the glass with nine rebounds and added two blocks.

Despite the loss, Winthrop’s Cori Lard facilitated the offense effectively, dishing out six assists. The Eagles will look to regroup when they host South Carolina Upstate on Wednesday. Gardner-Webb, meanwhile, aims to build on this conference victory as it travels to face Presbyterian next Saturday.
