Seton Hall Holds Off Georgetown for Gritty Big East Road Win

WASHINGTON (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by scoring droughts and critical late-game execution, the Seton Hall women’s basketball team held off a persistent Georgetown squad for a 58-52 victory in a Big East Conference game Thursday afternoon at Capital One Arena.

The Pirates, who led wire-to-wire, improved to 15-6 overall. The Hoyas fell to 12-9.

Seton Hall established control early with a blistering first-quarter offensive display, building a 22-16 lead. The Pirates connected on their first three field goal attempts, including a 3-pointer from Savannah Catalon and a turnaround jumper from Mariana Valenzuela, to set an immediate tone. Georgetown, led by early baskets from Brianna Scott and Destiny Agubata, managed to keep pace initially but could never draw even.

The game’s complexion shifted dramatically in the second quarter as both offenses stalled. Seton Hall managed only nine points in the period, while Georgetown was held to 10. The Pirates’ early shooting touch vanished, leading to a stretch of over five minutes without a field goal. Georgetown capitalized with a 7-0 run, capped by a Chet Nweke free throw, to close the gap to 26-23. A late driving layup by Catalon provided Seton Hall a slim 31-26 advantage at halftime.

The third quarter saw Georgetown repeatedly threaten to overtake the Pirates. The Hoyas opened the period with a quick score from Agubata and later tied the game at 35-35 on a layup from Brianna Scott with 7:33 remaining. Each time Georgetown drew close, however, Seton Hall found a response. Following the tie, Ja’Kahla Craft hit a jump shot and Mariana Valenzuela drilled a 3-pointer to push the lead back to five. Georgetown’s Khia Miller scored on a driving layup and converted a free throw just before the quarter ended to trim Seton Hall’s lead to 41-40 heading into the final period.

The most important sequence of the game unfolded in the fourth quarter as Seton Hall’s veteran guards made decisive plays to finally create separation. With the Pirates clinging to a 44-42 lead and the shot clock winding down, Shailyn Pinkney found Craft for a clutch 3-pointer from the wing with 7:45 to play. On the ensuing possession, Pinkney stripped the ball from Georgetown’s Khadee Hession, leading to a fast-break layup by Pinkney herself, completing a critical five-point swing in 19 seconds and extending the lead to 49-42.

Georgetown refused to capitulate, cutting the deficit to 52-49 after a 3-pointer from Destiny Agubata with 32 seconds left. The Hoyas were forced to foul, and Catalon, a 5-foot-8 guard from Mansfield, Texas, sealed the victory at the free-throw line. She sank four consecutive attempts in the final 29 seconds, part of her team-high 17-point performance, to ice the game.

Valenzuela, a 6-foot-2 forward from Mazatlan, Mexico, led all scorers with 19 points and added four rebounds. Pinkney, from East Hartford, Connecticut, contributed five points, five assists and two blocks while orchestrating the offense for 38 minutes. Craft added eight points off the bench.

For Georgetown, Agubata, from Moreno Valley, California, led the way with 12 points. Miller, from Woodbridge, Virginia, finished with 10 points, four rebounds and three assists. Scott, from Reston, Virginia, added 11 points.

The game was a stark contrast to the teams’ previous meeting on Dec. 31, which Seton Hall won by 45 points. Georgetown’s defense, which entered the game allowing an average of 56.8 points, kept them within striking distance throughout, but their offense could not sustain enough momentum to overcome the early deficit and Seton Hall’s timely responses.

Seton Hall next hosts Creighton on Sunday. Georgetown returns to action at home against Marquette, also on Sunday.
