Colorado Women Grind Out Defensive Win at Kansas State
MANHATTAN, Kan. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined more by grit than grace, the Colorado Buffaloes grinded out a 56-47 victory over the Kansas State Wildcats in a Big 12 women’s basketball contest Thursday night at Bramlage Coliseum.
The game, played before an announced crowd of 3,232, was a stark contrast in offensive execution, with both teams combining to shoot under 35% from the field. Colorado, however, leveraged a significant advantage on the offensive glass and a crucial scoring run bridging the third and fourth quarters to secure the road win and improve to 14-7 overall. Kansas State fell to an even 11-11.
The most pivotal sequence of the game unfolded late in the third quarter and early in the fourth, transforming a tight contest into a manageable Colorado lead. Trailing 31-28 with under three minutes remaining in the third, the Buffaloes closed the period on a 5-2 spurt, capped by a Zyanna Walker layup assisted by Erianna Gooden with 34 seconds left, to trim the deficit to 33-31.
The momentum carried into the final frame. After Kansas State’s Nastja Claessens opened the fourth with a 3-pointer to push the lead back to five, Colorado’s defense stiffened and its offense found a rhythm. The Buffaloes embarked on a decisive 13-3 run over the next six minutes. The surge was fueled by interior play and free throws. Jade Masogayo converted a pair from the line, and after a Kansas State turnover, Logyn Greer found Walker for a critical 3-pointer. Masogayo then scored on consecutive layups, the second again assisted by Greer, to give Colorado a 44-38 lead with 4:51 remaining. The Wildcats, plagued by turnovers and cold shooting, could not mount a sustained response, never pulling closer than four points the rest of the way.
The contest was characterized by relentless defensive pressure and offensive inefficiency. Colorado finished the night shooting 21 for 61 from the field, a rate of 34.4%. Kansas State was even colder, connecting on just 16 of 49 attempts for 32.7%. Both teams struggled profoundly from beyond the arc, with Colorado making 5 of 22 and Kansas State a dismal 2 of 15.
The Buffaloes compensated for their shooting woes by dominating the offensive boards, hauling in 15 rebounds on their own end compared to just seven for the Wildcats. This effort generated multiple second-chance opportunities and was a key factor in Colorado attempting 12 more field goals. Despite committing 16 turnovers, which Kansas State converted into 17 points, Colorado won the points-off-turnovers battle by one, scoring 18 off 17 Wildcat giveaways.
Zyanna Walker, a guard from Wichita, Kansas, led all scorers with 13 points for Colorado, adding two assists in 32 minutes. She was joined in double figures by frontcourt players Jade Masogayo of Fort Worth, Texas, and Logyn Greer of Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, who each also scored 13 points. Masogayo added two assists and a block in 37 minutes, while Greer contributed three assists in 24 minutes. Desiree Wooten of Dallas provided a significant spark off the bench with 11 points.
Kansas State was led by Jordan Speiser of Warrenton, Missouri, who scored 12 points. Gina Garcia of Barcelona, Spain, added eight points and a team-high four assists, while Nastja Claessens of Waregem, Belgium, chipped in seven points. The Wildcats’ offense was hampered by its backcourt, as starting guards Taryn Sides and Brandie Harrod combined for just six points on 2-of-12 shooting, though Sides did contribute three assists and three steals in a full 40 minutes.
The first half set the tone for the defensive battle, with Colorado taking a 22-18 lead into the break after holding the Wildcats to eight points in the second quarter. The third quarter saw Kansas State find a brief offensive pulse, outscoring Colorado 15-13 to close the gap before the Buffaloes’ decisive run sealed the outcome.
According to Interstat’s ELO system, Kansas State entered the game with a 70.1% probability to win. Colorado defied those odds with a resilient performance, particularly in the final quarter, to split the season series after falling to the Wildcats earlier in the month.
Colorado travels to face Kansas on Sunday. Kansas State begins a two-game road swing in Arizona, facing Arizona State on Sunday.
