Eastern Kentucky Women Roll Past West Georgia in ASUN Matchup
CARROLLTON, Ga. (Interstat) — A dominant first-quarter performance set the tone, and the Eastern Kentucky Lady Colonels never looked back, defeating the West Georgia Wolves 68-55 in an ASUN Conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at The Coliseum.
Eastern Kentucky, improving to 18-4 overall, seized control from the opening tip, racing to a 26-10 lead after the first quarter. The early surge proved insurmountable for West Georgia, which fell to 13-7 despite a persistent effort across the final three periods.
The game’s most critical sequence unfolded in the opening minutes, where Eastern Kentucky established a commanding lead that West Georgia could not overcome. The Lady Colonels opened the contest on a 13-2 run, fueled by efficient ball movement and stifling defense. Joseana Vaz, a junior from Praia, Cape Verde, ignited the run with a layup and a 3-pointer, while senior guard Liz Freihofer of Union, Kentucky, added a 3-pointer of her own. The Wolves struggled to find offensive rhythm against Eastern Kentucky’s pressure, committing early turnovers and missing their first several shots from the field.
West Georgia settled in during the second quarter, outscoring Eastern Kentucky 16-8 behind the play of Asia Donald and Sydne Tolbert. Donald, a sophomore from Hobart, Indiana, led all scorers with 18 points, while Tolbert, a Louisville, Kentucky native, added 15. Their efforts trimmed the deficit to 34-26 at halftime, but the Wolves could not sustain the momentum after the break.
Any hope of a complete West Georgia comeback was extinguished early in the third quarter. After the Wolves cut the lead to five, Eastern Kentucky responded with a decisive 11-2 run. The spurt was highlighted by another 3-pointer from Vaz and capped by a Freihofer 3-pointer, pushing the Lady Colonels’ advantage back to 45-34 and forcing a West Georgia timeout. The Wolves would not get within single digits again.
Freihofer led a balanced Eastern Kentucky attack with 17 points and four assists in 40 minutes of action. Vaz matched Donald’s game-high 18 points and added two assists. Althea Kara Angeles, a guard from Melbourne, Australia, provided steady play with 12 points and five assists. Ndidiamaka Ndukwe of Inkster, Michigan, contributed 11 points off the bench.
For West Georgia, Donald’s 18 points came on an efficient shooting night, and Tolbert’s 15 were accompanied by a game-high 38 minutes. Jasmine Jones, a local product from Carrollton, Georgia, finished with eight points and a block.
The victory extended Eastern Kentucky’s winning streak to four games and completed a regular-season sweep of West Georgia, having also defeated the Wolves 69-53 on Jan. 1 in Richmond, Kentucky. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for West Georgia.
Eastern Kentucky shot effectively from the floor, while West Georgia struggled with its shooting percentage. The Lady Colonels also capitalized on free throw opportunities, while the Wolves had a lower conversion rate from the line. Eastern Kentucky’s defense held West Georgia below its season scoring average.
A crowd of 513 watched the contest at The Coliseum. Eastern Kentucky will look to continue its conference success on the road at Queens (N.C.) on Saturday. West Georgia aims to rebound at home against Bellarmine, also on Saturday.
The game’s outcome aligned with pregame projections from Interstat’s ELO system, which gave Eastern Kentucky a 58.50 percent probability of victory. The Lady Colonels’ strong start and ability to answer every West Georgia rally ensured that probability was realized.
