New Mexico Women Fend Off UNLV Rally in Mountain West Matchup

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (Interstat) — In a critical Mountain West Conference clash that tightened the league standings, the New Mexico Lobos avenged an early-season defeat by handing the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels a 68-57 loss in women’s basketball on Wednesday night at The Pit.

A crowd of 4,366 watched as the Lobos (14-7, 5-3) used a blistering start and a decisive fourth-quarter run to split the season series and pull even with the Rebels (14-7, 5-3) in the conference race. The victory was built on efficient offense and a defensive effort that stifled UNLV for long stretches, particularly in the opening period.

New Mexico set the tone immediately, racing to a 20-9 lead after the first quarter. The Lobos connected on three of their nine total 3-pointers in the opening frame, with Destinee Hooks and Alyssa Hargrove hitting from deep in the first three minutes. UNLV, meanwhile, struggled to find any rhythm, shooting just 4 of 13 from the field and committing four turnovers in the quarter. The Rebels’ leading scorer, Jasmyn Lott, was held to five points in the period as New Mexico’s defensive pressure took hold.

The Rebels showed resilience in the second and third quarters, methodically chipping away at the deficit. They outscored New Mexico 15-13 in the second quarter, led by Lott’s aggressive drives, and exploded for 20 points in the third. A 10-2 run by UNLV late in the third, capped by a Mariah Elohim 3-pointer and a Destiny Brown layup, cut the Lobos’ lead to just 49-47 heading into the final minute. However, Joana Magalhães drew a foul and sank two free throws to give New Mexico a 51-47 advantage entering the fourth.

The most important sequence of the game came early in the final period. After a UNLV shot clock violation, Destiny Brown hit a jumper to pull the Rebels within two at 51-49 with 9:08 remaining. The Lobos responded with authority. Over the next four minutes, New Mexico unleashed a 12-2 run that effectively sealed the outcome. The surge was fueled by Laila Abdurraqib, who scored eight points during the stretch, including two crucial 3-pointers. Her second triple, assisted by Cacia Antonio with 3:40 left, pushed the lead to 63-53 and silenced UNLV’s final push.

New Mexico’s offensive execution proved superior throughout. The Lobos shot 50.9% from the field (28 of 55) and 45% from 3-point range (9 of 20), posting an offensive rating of 117.4 points per 100 possessions. UNLV managed only 40.4% shooting (21 of 52) and a 26.7% clip from beyond the arc (4 of 15), resulting in an offensive rating of 95.6.

Magalhães led a balanced New Mexico attack with 15 points, while Hooks added 13 points and three assists. Abdurraqib provided a massive spark off the bench, scoring all 11 of her points in the second half, including nine in the fourth quarter. Antonio contributed nine points, two assists, two steals and a block, anchoring the defense.

For UNLV, Lott finished with a game-high 19 points but needed 17 shots to get there. Aaliyah Alexander added 12 points and three assists. The Rebels’ offense was hampered by just five total assists, matching their turnover count in the steals column, and they were outscored 34-30 in the paint.

The win was a significant rebound for New Mexico, which had lost 89-71 to UNLV in Las Vegas just over a month ago. It also halted a two-game UNLV winning streak that included a road victory at Nevada. Both teams now look ahead to pivotal conference matchups on Saturday, with New Mexico hosting Utah State and UNLV returning home to face Colorado State.
