Preview: Massachusetts Minutewomen at Ohio Bobcats
ATHENS, Ohio (Interstat) — A pivotal Mid-American Conference women’s basketball matchup awaits Wednesday night as the surging Massachusetts Minutewomen visit the Ohio Bobcats at the Convocation Center.
Massachusetts (14-4 overall) enters with momentum from a nail-biting 65-64 home victory over Bowling Green last Saturday. The Minutewomen have won seven of their last nine, showcasing a balanced attack. In the win over Bowling Green, Allie Palmieri scored 20 points, Yahmani McKayle added 16 points and eight assists, and standout forward Megan Olbrys contributed 16 points and seven rebounds.
Olbrys has been a consistent force for UMass. Over her last nine games, she is averaging 13.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists per contest, including a 19-point performance in a win at Buffalo on Jan. 17.
Ohio (12-6) looks to rebound on its home floor after a 75-66 loss to Toledo this past Saturday. The Bobcats had won five of six prior to that setback. Guard Bailey Tabeling leads the offensive charge, averaging 16.1 points per game over her last eight outings. She dropped 20 points in a rout of Bowling Green on Jan. 21 and dished out seven assists in a win at Buffalo on Jan. 10.
The Bobcats boast a potent offense, having scored 85 or more points in three of their last seven games, but will be tested by a UMass squad that has held opponents under 70 points in 13 of its 18 games this season.
This contest features two of the MAC’s top teams jockeying for position in the conference standings. UMass aims to solidify its strong start, while Ohio seeks a statement win to regain its footing. The matchup between Olbrys’s all-around game and Tabeling’s scoring prowess will be a key factor.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. EST Wednesday. Following this game, Ohio travels to face Miami (Ohio) on Saturday, while Massachusetts hosts Eastern Michigan on Feb. 4.
