Chattanooga Holds Off UNC Greensboro in Defensive Southern Conference Battle
GREENSBORO, N.C. (Interstat) — The Chattanooga Lady Mocs used a dominant defensive performance to grind out a 52-40 victory over the UNC Greensboro Spartans in a Southern Conference women’s basketball matchup Thursday night at Greensboro Coliseum.
In a game defined by offensive struggles, Chattanooga’s ability to establish an early lead and then withstand a second-half push from the Spartans proved decisive. The Lady Mocs improved to 12-5 overall, while UNC Greensboro fell to 12-8.
The most important part of the game was Chattanooga’s suffocating first-quarter defense, which set the tone for the entire contest. The Lady Mocs held the Spartans to just eight points in the opening period while building a 17-8 lead. That early cushion became critical as both teams labored to find any offensive rhythm throughout the night.
Chattanooga’s defense was relentless from the opening tip, forcing difficult shots and creating turnovers. The Spartans, who entered the game with a 68 percent probability to win according to Interstat’s ELO system, shot a frigid percentage from the floor and never fully recovered from the initial deficit. The Lady Mocs extended their lead to 29-19 by halftime, but the third quarter saw UNC Greensboro mount its only sustained challenge of the game.
The Spartans emerged from the break with renewed energy, outscoring Chattanooga 16-6 in the third period. A jump shot by Makiah Asidanya just before the quarter ended capped the rally and cut the Lady Mocs’ lead to just 35-31, injecting tension into the final ten minutes.
However, Chattanooga’s defense reasserted itself emphatically in the fourth quarter, completely shutting down the Spartan offense. UNC Greensboro managed only five points in the final period, going scoreless for long stretches as the Lady Mocs pulled away. Chattanooga closed the game on a 17-5 run, sealing the road victory.
Ava Card, a 6-foot guard from Montgomery, Alabama, led Chattanooga with 10 points in 33 minutes. Falon Bedke, a 6-2 forward from Oakley, Idaho, also added 10 points. Point guard Caia Elisaldez of Whittier, California, orchestrated the offense with eight assists to go with nine points in a team-high 38 minutes. The Lady Mocs also received a significant contribution from their bench, with Sarah Owona of Opvelp, Belgium, scoring six points, all from beyond the arc.
For UNC Greensboro, Makiah Asidanya of Pittsburg, California, was the lone player in double figures, finishing with 14 points. Jaila Lee of Brentwood, Tennessee, added six points. The Spartans’ offense never found consistency, hampered by Chattanooga’s length and active hands, which resulted in numerous blocked shots and deflections.
The game was a stark contrast to recent performances for both teams. Chattanooga entered having won four of its last five, including a 53-41 win at East Tennessee State last Saturday. UNC Greensboro was looking to bounce back from a narrow 61-59 road loss at Wofford on Jan. 17.
The announced attendance was 541 at the 23,000-seat Greensboro Coliseum.
Chattanooga will look to carry the momentum from this defensive showcase into a quick turnaround, traveling to face Western Carolina on Saturday. UNC Greensboro also returns to action Saturday, hosting East Tennessee State as both teams continue Southern Conference play. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Chattanooga on Feb. 21.
