Lady Colonels Dominate Early, Cruise Past Dolphins in ASUN Matchup

RICHMOND, Ky. (Interstat) — The Eastern Kentucky Lady Colonels used a dominant first half to establish a commanding lead and then weathered a determined third-quarter push from the Jacksonville Dolphins to secure an 82-63 victory in an ASUN Conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at McBrayer Arena.

The most important part of the game was unquestionably the opening quarter, where Eastern Kentucky set an overwhelming tone from which Jacksonville could never fully recover. The Lady Colonels erupted for 29 points in the first 10 minutes, connecting on a blistering 8 of 17 from three-point range for the game, with several of those deep shots falling early. Jacksonville, meanwhile, struggled to find any offensive rhythm against Eastern Kentucky’s defensive pressure, managing only 17 points in the period. This 12-point deficit after one quarter ballooned to 27 points by halftime, as the Lady Colonels continued their efficient scoring to take a 54-27 lead into the break. The early barrage created a mountain too steep for the Dolphins to climb, despite a valiant second-half effort.

Jacksonville emerged from halftime with renewed energy, outscoring Eastern Kentucky 24-16 in the third quarter. The Dolphins’ defense forced several Lady Colonel turnovers during the stretch, converting them into transition opportunities to cut into the lead. However, the first-half hole proved insurmountable, as Eastern Kentucky stabilized in the final period to close out the win.

Kenleigh Woods, a 5-foot-6 guard from Catlettsburg, Kentucky, led all scorers with 17 points for Eastern Kentucky, adding four assists in 32 minutes. She was one of three Lady Colonels to finish in double figures. Liz Freihofer of Union, Kentucky, contributed 11 points, four assists and two blocks, while Althea Kara Angeles, from Melbourne, Australia, and Ndidiamaka Ndukwe of Inkster, Michigan, each chipped in 15 points. Ella Bradley of Cambridge, New Zealand, directed the offense with a game-high six assists.

For Jacksonville, Tatum Brown led the way with 12 points and five assists in 36 minutes. Bailey Burns of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, also scored 12 points. The Dolphins’ offensive struggles were encapsulated by their shooting numbers; they made just 22 of 71 field goal attempts, a 31 percent clip, and were an icy 2 for 16 from beyond the arc.

Eastern Kentucky improved its season record to 16-4 overall and strengthened its position in the conference standings. The Lady Colonels showcased a balanced attack, with 34 points in the paint and 15 points off 20 Jacksonville turnovers. Jacksonville fell to 10-7 with the loss, unable to build on its overtime victory over Central Arkansas from the previous week.

The announced attendance was 512. Eastern Kentucky, which entered the game with an 82.2 percent probability to win according to Interstat’s ELO system, validated that projection with its early explosion and consistent play.

Jacksonville will look to rebound quickly, traveling to face Bellarmine on Saturday. Eastern Kentucky continues its homestand, preparing to host North Florida on Saturday as both teams continue their ASUN Conference schedules.
