Texas Southern at Alcorn State

Preview: Texas Southern Lady Tigers at Alcorn State Lady Braves

LORMAN, Miss. (Interstat) — Two Southwestern Athletic Conference women’s basketball teams riding the momentum of conference wins will meet Saturday when the Texas Southern Lady Tigers visit the Alcorn State Lady Braves.

The game is scheduled for Jan. 17, 2026, at the Davey Whitney Complex on the campus of Alcorn State University.

Texas Southern (8-9 overall) enters having won three straight, including a 60-46 road victory at Jackson State on Thursday. The Lady Tigers have found their rhythm in SWAC play, averaging 70.7 points in their last three contests after some early-season offensive struggles against a tough non-conference slate that included losses to Power Five programs Vanderbilt and West Virginia.

The Lady Tigers are led by guard Daeja Holmes, who is coming off a 17-point performance at Jackson State. Over her last seven games, Holmes is averaging 12.0 points and 3.1 assists, serving as a consistent offensive catalyst.

Alcorn State (5-9) also defended its home court Thursday, defeating Prairie View 59-43. The Lady Braves have shown a pattern of stout defense in their wins, holding opponents to 45 points or fewer in three of their five victories this season. Forward Nakia Cheatham is a key two-way player for Alcorn State, averaging 10.3 points over her last six games and providing a rim-protecting presence with 10 blocks in that span.

While Texas Southern boasts a stronger overall record, both teams are looking to establish consistency in conference play. The Lady Braves will aim to leverage their home-court advantage, where they are 3-2 this season, to slow down a Texas Southern offense that has recently hit its stride.

This matchup is the first of two scheduled meetings between the schools this season. They are slated to play again in Houston on Feb. 26.

Following this contest, Texas Southern returns home to host Alabama State on Jan. 22. Alcorn State hits the road for a Florida swing, facing Bethune-Cookman on Jan. 22 and Florida A&M on Jan. 24.
