Alcorn State Women Use Strong Start, Turnovers to Defeat Texas Southern

LORMAN, Miss. (Interstat) — The Alcorn State Lady Braves capitalized on a dominant defensive performance and a decisive edge in points off turnovers to secure a 66-51 victory over the Texas Southern Lady Tigers in a Southwestern Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at the Davey Whitney Complex.

The game, played before an announced crowd of 424, was defined by Alcorn State’s persistent pressure. The Lady Braves forced 19 Texas Southern turnovers and converted them into 24 points, while the Lady Tigers managed just four points off 11 Alcorn State miscues. That 20-point disparity proved to be the central narrative of the contest, overwhelming a Texas Southern team that struggled to find any offensive rhythm for long stretches.

Alcorn State set the tone early, closing the first quarter on a 14-2 run to take a 19-12 lead. The Lady Braves extended their advantage by holding Texas Southern to just six points in the second quarter, entering halftime with a 32-18 cushion. The Lady Tigers showed a flicker of life after the break, outscoring Alcorn State 23-20 in the third quarter behind 10 points from Maci Quiller to pull within 52-41. However, the Lady Braves quickly reasserted control in the final period, maintaining a double-digit lead throughout the quarter to seal the win.

Ja’Sharreah Hunt led Alcorn State with 14 points, while Kiarra Henderson filled the stat sheet with 13 points, five assists and four steals. Nakia Cheatham added 15 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Lady Braves, who improved to 6-9 overall.

Texas Southern was paced by Quiller, a junior from Pflugerville, Texas, who scored a game-high 16 points. Daeja Holmes contributed 10 points and five assists for the Lady Tigers, who fell to 8-10. The team’s offensive struggles were stark, shooting just 36.5 percent from the floor and a frigid 16.7 percent from three-point range.

Beyond the turnover battle, Alcorn State’s defensive activity was reflected in a 13-6 advantage in steals. The Lady Braves also shared the ball more effectively, registering 13 assists to Texas Southern’s six. While both teams had nearly identical possession counts, Alcorn State’s offensive rating of 97.2 far outpaced Texas Southern’s mark of 75.3, underscoring the efficiency gap created by the Lady Braves’ defensive efforts.

The most critical sequence of the game occurred late in the first quarter, encapsulating the themes of the afternoon. With Texas Southern leading 12-10 after a Ciara Brannon tip-in, Alcorn State closed the period with a 9-0 run over the final 1:58. The run was fueled by Lady Tiger turnovers and immediate conversions, including a layup by Dalayja Hurt-Floyd off a steal just before the buzzer. This burst transformed a narrow deficit into a seven-point lead and established a momentum that Texas Southern could never fully reclaim.

With the win, Alcorn State evened its conference record and will look to build on the performance as it heads on the road next week to face Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M. Texas Southern, which had won three of its last four SWAC games entering the contest, will aim to regroup at home against Alabama State and Alabama A&M.
