Arnolie’s 27 Points Lead Brown Women to Road Win Over Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. (Interstat) — Grace Arnolie scored 27 points and Brown used a dominant defensive performance to pull away from Cornell for a 64-48 victory in an Ivy League women’s basketball game Saturday at Newman Arena.

The Bears (11-4, 2-0 Ivy) held the Big Red (7-9, 2-1) to 31.4% shooting from the field and just 15.8% from three-point range, building a double-digit lead by halftime and never letting Cornell mount a serious challenge in the second half.

Arnolie, a guard from Vienna, Virginia, was the catalyst, adding five assists in 36 minutes. She shot 10 of 22 from the field, including 6 of 13 from beyond the arc, consistently answering any minor Cornell push with a critical basket. Her performance continued a stellar stretch, following games of 24 and 21 points in Brown’s previous two contests.

The most important sequence of the game came late in the first quarter, establishing a tone of defensive control that would last all afternoon. With Brown leading 9-6 and under a minute to play, Cornell’s Trinity Jones hit a three-pointer to tie the game. The Bears immediately responded, closing the quarter on a 5-0 run. Ada Anamekwe converted a layup off an assist from Charlotte Adams-Lopez with 55 seconds left, and after an Olivia Young steal, Anamekwe scored again inside just before the buzzer. That spurt gave Brown a 14-9 lead after one period, an advantage they would not relinquish.

Brown stretched the lead to 31-23 by halftime, then delivered a decisive blow in the third quarter. Leading 29-27, the Bears erupted on a 12-0 run over a four-minute span. Arnolie started it with a three-pointer, Alyssa Moreland converted a three-point play, and Arnolie capped it with another three, pushing the lead to 41-27 with 2:41 left in the third. Cornell managed just eight points in the quarter on 3-of-13 shooting, and Brown took a commanding 49-31 lead into the final period.

The Big Red never got closer than 13 points in the fourth quarter. Moreland supported Arnolie with 14 points and a block for Brown. Anamekwe added seven points, three assists and two blocks, providing a strong interior presence.

Cornell was led by Rachel Kaus with 13 points and Clarke Jackson with 11. The Big Red struggled mightily from distance, making only 3 of 19 three-point attempts, and were outscored 32-24 in the paint. They kept the game relatively close at the free-throw line, making 13 of 15 attempts, but could not generate consistent offense from their half-court sets, finishing with an offensive rating of 76.0 points per 100 possessions.

Brown, which entered the game with a 73.9% win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system, was more efficient, posting an offensive rating of 99.4. The Bears also forced 11 turnovers, converting them into 14 points.

The announced attendance was 327 at Newman Arena. Brown next travels to face Columbia on Monday. Cornell will host Yale on Monday.
