Kent State Edges Ohio in Tight MAC Women’s Basketball Contest

KENT, Ohio (Interstat) — In a game defined by relentless pressure and missed opportunities, the Kent State women’s basketball team overcame a shaky start and a significant rebounding disparity to edge Ohio 71-68 in a Mid-American Conference thriller on Wednesday night at Memorial Athletics Center.

The Golden Flashes, who trailed by seven after a blistering first quarter from the visiting Bobcats, clawed back with a decisive second-quarter run and then made just enough plays in a chaotic final minute to secure the victory before a crowd of 1,292.

Ohio exploded from the gate, connecting on four of its first five three-point attempts to build a 25-18 lead after one quarter. Elli Garnett and Asiah Baxter each hit early threes, and the Bobcats’ defense forced six Kent State turnovers in the opening period. The momentum shifted dramatically in the second quarter, however, as Kent State’s defense tightened. The Golden Flashes outscored Ohio 21-11 in the frame, fueled by an 11-2 run that turned a five-point deficit into a four-point lead. Emory Klatt, coming off the bench, was instrumental in the surge, scoring seven points in the quarter and providing a consistent interior presence.

The third quarter was a back-and-forth affair with five lead changes. Ohio’ Monica Williams and Bella Ranallo hit key shots to keep the Bobcats close, but Kent State’s Dionna Gray orchestrated the offense masterfully, dishing out four of her game-high 12 assists in the period. A three-pointer from Kent State’s Meghan Murray in the final minute gave the Golden Flashes a 59-58 edge heading into the fourth.

The final quarter was a tense, defensive struggle. With Kent State leading 66-64 and under five minutes to play, both teams endured scoring droughts and a flurry of turnovers. The most critical sequence began with just over a minute remaining. Trailing 69-66, Ohio’s Monica Williams drove and converted a tough layup while being fouled. She completed the three-point play to tie the game at 69 with 55 seconds left.

On the ensuing possession, Kent State’s Mya Babbitt answered immediately, draining a deep three-pointer from the wing off a Gray assist to put the Golden Flashes back up 72-69 with 49 seconds on the clock. After an Ohio timeout, the Bobcats worked the ball to Aliah McWhorter for a layup to cut the deficit to one with 17 seconds remaining.

Ohio was forced to foul, sending Kent State’s Bianca Juzzo to the line for two shots with 13 seconds left. Juzzo made the first but missed the second, leaving the door open for Ohio down 73-71. The Bobcats secured the rebound and called timeout with seven seconds to set up a final play. The inbounds pass went to Monica Williams near midcourt, but her dribble was picked up by a double team, resulting in a held ball. The possession arrow favored Kent State, effectively sealing the game with four seconds left. Juzzo was fouled again and made both free throws for the final margin.

Klatt, a 6-foot-1 sophomore from Kildeer, Illinois, led all scorers with 17 points in just 24 minutes, adding a game-high four offensive rebounds. Babbitt, a junior guard from Papillion, Nebraska, added 18 points and played 38 minutes for Kent State. Gray’s 12 assists were a game-high and pivotal in breaking Ohio’s defensive pressure.

For Ohio, Ranallo, a freshman guard from Lake Forest, Illinois, scored 12 points off the bench. Williams, a junior from Indianapolis, also had 12 points, while Bailey Tabeling of Seymour, Indiana, contributed nine points, four assists, and two blocks in 33 minutes.

Despite the loss, Ohio dominated several statistical categories. The Bobcats shot 44.2% from the field to Kent State’s 37.1%, and committed one fewer turnover, 20 to 21. The most glaring disparity was on the offensive glass, where Kent State held a massive 14-3 advantage, leading to 14 second-chance points. The Golden Flashes also made the most of their trips to the free-throw line, converting 16 of 20 attempts, while Ohio went 13 for 18.

The win improved Kent State’s record to 7-10 overall, while Ohio fell to 10-5. Both teams continue MAC play on Saturday, with Kent State hosting Akron and Ohio returning home to face Northern Illinois. The two teams are scheduled for a rematch in Athens on Feb. 14.
