Preview: Saint John’s Looks to Continue Surge at Georgetown
WASHINGTON (Interstat) — The surging Saint John’s women’s basketball team aims to solidify its standing in the Big East Conference when it visits Georgetown at Capital One Arena on Tuesday night.
The Red Storm (14-4, 3-2 Big East) enter on a strong note, having won three of their last four, including a gritty 49-39 defensive victory over Butler on Saturday. Georgetown (9-7, 2-3), meanwhile, seeks consistency after a narrow 80-77 road loss to DePaul in its last outing.
Saint John’s has been propelled by its standout forward, Beautiful Waheed. The junior is coming off a dominant performance against Butler, recording 16 points, six rebounds and five blocks. Over her last five games, Waheed is averaging 12.0 points and 3.2 blocks, providing a major presence on both ends of the floor. She is complemented by Brooke Moore, who posted a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds against the Bulldogs.
The Hoyas will counter with high-scoring guard Destiny Agubata. She erupted for 24 points and five assists in the loss to DePaul, demonstrating her ability to carry the offensive load. Agubata has averaged 14.5 points over her last four games. Support from Laila Jewett (17 points vs. DePaul) will be crucial for a Georgetown offense that has shown volatility in conference play.
The matchup pits Saint John’s formidable defense, which allows just 56.2 points per game, against a Georgetown team that scores 68.1 per contest but is coming off a 36-point outing in a late December loss to Seton Hall.
Historically, the home team has dominated this series, winning 12 of the last 13 meetings. The teams will meet again in Queens on Feb. 18.
For Saint John’s, a win would bolster its NCAA tournament resume and keep pace in the upper tier of the Big East. Georgetown, hovering near .500, views this as a key opportunity for a signature conference win on its home floor.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST. The game will be broadcast on the Big East Digital Network.
