Georgetown Dominates Saint John’s in Big East Women’s Basketball

WASHINGTON (Interstat) — The Georgetown women’s basketball team delivered a commanding defensive performance, stifling Saint John’s from the opening tip and cruising to a 59-34 victory in a Big East Conference game Tuesday night at Capital One Arena.

The Hoyas, improving to 10-7 overall and 3-3 in conference play, established control immediately with a 20-8 first-quarter run and never relented. The Red Storm, who entered the game with a 14-4 record and had won four of their last five, were held to a season-low in points, their previous worst being a 43-point outing in a loss to Connecticut just six days prior.

Georgetown’s defensive pressure was the story, forcing Saint John’s into a disjointed offensive night filled with rushed shots and turnovers. The Hoyas consistently disrupted passing lanes and contested every attempt, holding the Red Storm to single-digit scoring in two of the four quarters. Saint John’s managed just six points in the third period as Georgetown extended its lead.

Destiny Agubata led all scorers with 15 points for Georgetown, adding four assists in 26 minutes. Laila Jewett provided crucial support with 13 points, three assists and a blocked shot. The Hoyas’ balance was evident as Cristen Carter contributed nine points and Brianna Byars added eight, with both players pulling down key rebounds.

For Saint John’s, which fell to 14-5 and 5-2 in the Big East, only Brooke Moore reached double figures, finishing with 11 points. The team’s offensive struggles were pervasive, with leading scorer Beautiful Waheed limited to just six points in 12 minutes of play.

The most decisive stretch of the game occurred early. After a competitive first few minutes that saw Saint John’s take a brief 5-2 lead on a Waheed three-pointer, Georgetown seized momentum with an 18-3 run to close the first quarter. The surge was fueled by defensive stops and efficient offense. Jewett and Agubata hit key shots, while Khadee Hession came off the bench to drill a three-pointer and then assist on another Jewett three in the final minute, giving the Hoyas a 20-8 advantage.

That early deficit proved insurmountable for the Red Storm. Every time Saint John’s showed a flicker of momentum, Georgetown had an answer. A mini-run by the Red Storm to open the second quarter was quickly snuffed out by a 6-0 Hoya response. In the third quarter, after Saint John’s cut the lead to 12, Georgetown responded with a 7-0 spurt, capped by a Khia Miller three-pointer, to push the margin to 19 and effectively end any doubt about the outcome.

The game’s statistical projections proved wildly inaccurate. Despite Interstat’s ELO system giving Saint John’s a nearly 65 percent probability to win and Georgetown being only a 2.5-point pregame favorite, the Hoyas dominated. The combined score of 93 points also fell dramatically under the over/under line of 124.5, underscoring the defensive nature of the contest.

Georgetown’s win creates a logjam in the middle of the Big East standings, while Saint John’s sees its promising start to conference play dented. The Hoyas look to build on this performance when they travel to face Marquette on Saturday. Saint John’s will aim to regroup quickly, heading to Cincinnati for a matchup with Xavier on the same day. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Queens on Feb. 18.
