Smith’s 30 Points Lead Maine Women Past NJIT
VEZAIE, Maine (Interstat) — Adrianna Smith delivered a dominant all-around performance with 30 points, eight assists and three blocks, leading the Maine Black Bears to an 86-67 victory over the NJIT Highlanders in an America East Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at Cross Insurance Center.
The Black Bears, improving to 8-9 overall, used a decisive second-quarter surge and a relentless defensive effort to pull away from the Highlanders, who fell to 11-6. Smith, a junior guard from Reston, Virginia, was the catalyst, shooting 12 of 22 from the field and adding eight rebounds while orchestrating the offense for 34 minutes.
The game’s most critical sequence unfolded in the second quarter, transforming a tight contest into a Maine-controlled affair. Leading 19-18 early in the period, the Black Bears unleashed a 17-4 run over a span of six minutes. The surge was fueled by stifling defense that forced five NJIT turnovers and limited the Highlanders to just two field goals. Smith scored six points during the run, while backcourt mate Sarah Talon of Windham, Maine, added four, including a driving layup that capped the burst and gave Maine a 36-22 lead with 4:15 remaining in the half.
Maine never looked back, taking a 39-28 advantage into halftime. The Black Bears’ defense set the tone for the remainder of the game, finishing with 12 steals and forcing 15 total turnovers, which they converted into 22 points. Maine also dominated the glass, securing 11 offensive rebounds leading to 15 second-chance points, compared to just two offensive boards for NJIT.
Smith received ample support. Talon finished with 19 points, six assists and three steals. Asta Blauenfeldt, a guard from Kongens Lyngby, Denmark, provided a significant spark off the bench, hitting four three-pointers for 18 points. Olivia Alvarez Tirado, also from Madrid, Spain, contributed five assists and four steals for a Maine squad that tallied 12 assists on 35 made field goals.
NJIT, which entered the game on a two-game winning streak, was led by Alejandra Zuniga’s 22 points and four assists. Marissa Gingrich added 14 points and Olivia Kulyk had 11 points and five assists. The Highlanders showed a flash of life in the third quarter, scoring 31 points, but could not consistently string together stops to cut the deficit to single digits. Maine answered with 27 points of its own in the third to maintain a comfortable 66-59 lead entering the final period.
The Black Bears then sealed the game with a 20-8 fourth-quarter advantage, holding NJIT to 3-of-15 shooting from the field in the final 10 minutes. Maine’s defensive pressure was exemplified by its 88.4 defensive rating, limiting NJIT to well below a point per possession.
The statistical disparity told the story of Maine’s comprehensive win. The Black Bears shot 47.3% from the field to NJIT’s 45.8%, and out-assisted the Highlanders 12 to 3. Maine’s efficiency was stark, posting an offensive rating of 111.4 points per 100 possessions, while NJIT managed just 88.4.
The win moves Maine to 2-2 in America East play, while NJIT drops to 2-2 in the conference. An announced crowd of 1,113 watched the Black Bears win their second straight game.
Maine next hosts Vermont on Thursday. NJIT returns home to face Massachusetts-Lowell, also on Thursday.
