Mississippi State Holds Off Louisiana-Monroe for Home Victory

STARKVILLE, Miss. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and offensive struggles, the Mississippi State Lady Bulldogs grinded out a 66-54 victory over the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at Humphrey Coliseum.

The Lady Bulldogs improved to 7-1 on the season, while the Warhawks fell to 5-2.

Mississippi State’s victory was anchored by a dominant performance on the glass and capitalizing on a cascade of Louisiana-Monroe turnovers. The Lady Bulldogs hauled in 19 offensive rebounds, leading to 19 second-chance points and a significant possession advantage. Louisiana-Monroe’s offense was crippled by 24 turnovers, which Mississippi State converted into 23 points.

The game was a tale of contrasting efficiencies. While neither team shot particularly well, Mississippi State managed a more effective offensive output, scoring 66 points on 67 possessions for an offensive rating of 99.0. Louisiana-Monroe, meanwhile, was held to 54 points on 70 possessions, resulting in an offensive rating of just 77.2, a key factor in the outcome.

Mississippi State’s Madison Francis, a 6-foot-2 sophomore from Lancaster, New York, was the engine for her team, posting a double-double with 8 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Her presence in the paint was felt beyond the scoring column, as she also tallied 3 blocks and 2 assists in 36 minutes of action.

The Lady Bulldogs’ offense was buoyed by balanced scoring. Favour Nwaedozi, a 6-foot-3 freshman from Delta, Nigeria, provided a spark off the bench with 13 points and 7 rebounds. Kharyssa Richardson, a 6-foot-2 sophomore from Douglasville, Georgia, added 11 points and 4 rebounds, while Jaylah Lampley, a 6-foot-1 freshman from Fishers, Indiana, chipped in 10 points and 5 rebounds. The backcourt duo of Trayanna Crisp and Destiney McPhaul each contributed 9 points.

For Louisiana-Monroe, Jazmine Jackson was the primary offensive threat. The 5-foot-8 guard from Jacksonville, Florida, scored a game-high 15 points, connecting on 5 of 12 shots from the field, including 3 of 7 from beyond the arc. Marcavia Shavers, a 6-foot-2 forward from Biloxi, Mississippi, controlled the interior for the Warhawks with a double-double of 6 points and 12 rebounds to go along with 4 assists and a block.

The Warhawks started the game competitively, with Asjah Inniss and Jackson hitting early shots to keep pace. However, Mississippi State’s relentless rebounding began to take its toll in the first quarter. A tip-in layup by Francis and a jumper from Saniyah King helped the Lady Bulldogs build a 20-15 lead by the end of the opening period.

The second quarter saw Mississippi State extend its lead, primarily from the free-throw line. The Lady Bulldogs went 10-for-12 from the stripe for the game, with Francis and Richardson converting key free throws in the first half to maintain a cushion. Louisiana-Monroe stayed within reach thanks to its three-point shooting, finishing the game 8-of-18 from deep, but could never string together a sustained run to seriously threaten the lead.

Mississippi State carried a 30-24 advantage into halftime and methodically built on it in the third quarter. A layup by Nwaedozi and a jumper from Richardson pushed the lead to double digits. Every time the Warhawks showed a sign of life, such as a three-pointer from Jackson, the Lady Bulldogs had an answer, often from Nwaedozi or Richardson in the post.

Entering the fourth quarter with a 49-43 lead, Mississippi State put the game away with a critical 8-2 run early in the period. A three-pointer from Lampley, assisted by Nwaedozi, was followed by a transition layup from Crisp, stretching the lead to 61-49 and effectively sealing the victory.

Louisiana-Monroe’s efforts to mount a late comeback were hampered by turnovers and an inability to secure defensive rebounds against the taller, more physical Lady Bulldogs lineup.

Mississippi State will look to continue its strong start when it hosts Pittsburgh on Thursday. Louisiana-Monroe will hit the road for a challenging matchup at Alabama on Dec. 7.
