Delaware Rallies Past Towson in Women’s Basketball

NEWARK, Del. (Interstat) — In a high-paced, turnover-filled contest, the Delaware women’s basketball team used a dominant performance on the glass and a decisive advantage at the free-throw line to secure a 91-80 victory over Towson on Sunday at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Blue Hens improved to 4-2 on the season, while the Tigers fell to an even 4-4.

Delaware’s victory was fueled by a balanced offensive attack and relentless rebounding. Trinity Vance led all scorers with 23 points in just 26 minutes off the bench. Kailah Correa added 17 points and a team-high five assists, while the frontcourt duo of Ande’a Cherisier and Lay Fantroy controlled the paint. Cherisier posted a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds, and Fantroy added 11 points and 12 rebounds.

The game was ultimately decided by two key statistical disparities. Delaware attempted 28 free throws, converting 22, while Towson managed only 10 attempts, making a mere three. The Blue Hens also dominated the offensive glass, hauling in 16 offensive rebounds compared to Towson’s seven, leading to numerous second-chance opportunities.

Despite the loss, Towson was led by a stellar performance from Zoli Khalil, who scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds. Tilda Sjökvist added 18 points, and Kayla Morris contributed 12 points and five rebounds off the bench.

The contest began as a back-and-forth affair, with both teams struggling to find an early rhythm. The first quarter featured six lead changes and three ties before Delaware emerged with a 19-17 lead. The Blue Hens began to create separation in the second quarter, building a 38-31 halftime advantage by capitalizing on Towson’s ball-handling issues and asserting their physicality inside.

Towson fought to stay within striking distance throughout the second half, largely on the strength of its perimeter shooting. The Tigers shot 45 percent from three-point range, with Sjökvist hitting four of her attempts. Every time the Tigers mounted a charge, however, Delaware had an answer, often in the form of a critical basket from Vance or a trip to the free-throw line.

A key sequence late in the fourth quarter effectively sealed the outcome. With just over three minutes remaining and Delaware leading 83-77, the Blue Hens secured two consecutive offensive rebounds, culminating in a layup and a free throw from Fantroy to extend the lead to nine points. Towson could not narrow the gap to fewer than seven points the rest of the way.

Delaware’s offensive efficiency proved superior, scoring 91 points on 80 possessions for a rating of 113.3. Towson, while shooting a respectable 54 percent from the field, scored 80 points on 79 possessions for an offensive rating of 101.6. Both teams were plagued by turnovers, with Towson committing 18 and Delaware giving the ball away 16 times.

The Blue Hens now look ahead to a road game at Colgate on Friday. Towson returns home to host Loyola Maryland on Thursday.
