Cal State Bakersfield Women Topple Omaha for First Win
OMAHA, Neb. (Interstat) — The Cal State Bakersfield women’s basketball team secured its first victory of the season Thursday night, overcoming a slow start to defeat Omaha 82-73 at Baxter Arena.
The Roadrunners, who entered the game with an 0-4 record, weathered an early offensive storm from the Mavericks before taking control in the second quarter and holding on for the non-conference win. The victory improved Cal State Bakersfield to 1-4, while Omaha dropped to 1-5.
Omaha came out firing in the first quarter, capitalizing on a hot start from beyond the arc to build an early lead. The Mavericks connected on four three-pointers in the opening period, including two from Sarai Estupiñan, and led 24-16 after one. The Roadrunners struggled to find their footing early, committing several turnovers against Omaha’s defensive pressure.
The momentum shifted decisively in the second quarter as Cal State Bakersfield’s defense tightened. The Roadrunners outscored the Mavericks 24-15 in the period, turning a deficit into a 40-39 halftime lead. The turnaround was fueled by a combination of forced turnovers and more efficient offense. Cal State Bakersfield converted 23 Omaha turnovers into 28 points over the course of the game, a key factor in the outcome.
Chrishawn Coleman led the Roadrunners’ charge, finishing with a team-high 21 points. The 5-foot-7 guard from Arlington, Virginia, was instrumental in the second-quarter surge and added three assists in 27 minutes of action.
The third quarter saw Cal State Bakersfield extend its lead, outscoring Omaha 23-15. The Roadrunners’ interior presence, led by Marley Langi and Tena Ikidi, began to dominate. Langi, a 6-foot forward from Redwood City, California, scored 19 points, including three three-pointers, and blocked a shot. Ikidi, a 6-foot-3 post player from Bayelsa State, Nigeria, was a force on both ends, recording a double-double with 16 points and contributing three assists and two blocks.
Morgan Hawkins provided a steady hand for the Roadrunners, playing 33 minutes and scoring 14 points. Her backcourt presence helped Cal State Bakersfield navigate Omaha’s defensive schemes and maintain its lead through the second half.
Despite the loss, Omaha was led by a stellar performance from local product Cora Olsen. The 5-foot-8 guard from Omaha, Nebraska, poured in a game-high 23 points in 38 minutes, showcasing her scoring ability at all three levels. Estupiñan, a 5-foot-5 guard from Cedar Park, Texas, added 19 points and a game-high five assists.
The Mavericks’ defense was anchored by Avril Smith, who also played 40 minutes. The Omaha native was a disruptive force, recording five blocks and three steals, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the team’s offensive inconsistencies. Omaha shot just 23 of 55 from the field for a 41.8 percent clip and committed those 23 costly turnovers.
While both teams attempted 55 field goals, Cal State Bakersfield’s efficiency from the free-throw line proved crucial. The Roadrunners went 25 for 34 from the charity stripe, while Omaha made 18 of 27. Cal State Bakersfield also held a significant advantage in points in the paint, outscoring Omaha 32-22.
The game was a stark contrast to pregame projections, as Interstat’s ELO system had given Omaha a 93.10 percent probability to win. The victory provides a significant boost for a Cal State Bakersfield team that had lost its first four games by an average of 24 points.
The announced attendance at Baxter Arena was 508.
Cal State Bakersfield looks to build on the momentum Saturday when it travels to face Wichita State. Omaha will also be back in action Saturday, hosting Lindenwood.
