Detroit at Toledo
TOLEDO, Ohio (Interstat) — The Toledo Rockets used a dominant first quarter and capitalized on a torrent of Detroit turnovers to secure a 66-52 victory over the Titans in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at Savage Hall.
Playing before a crowd of 3,685, the Rockets seized control early, outscoring Detroit 22-15 in the opening period and never relinquishing the lead. The Titans struggled to maintain possession, committing 22 turnovers which Toledo converted into 26 points. That disparity proved decisive in a game where the Rockets also won the battle on the glass, out-rebounding Detroit and grabbing 10 offensive boards to the Titans’ two.
Toledo’s offense was a balanced effort, with four players scoring in double figures. Faith Fedd-Robinson, a guard from Newark, New Jersey, led the way with 17 points. She was complemented by forward Miriam Diala of Heidelberg, Germany, who posted a stat line of 12 points and eight rebounds, and guard Kendall Carruthers of Toledo, Ohio, who added 13 points and six rebounds. Forward Evalyse Cole from Easton, Pennsylvania, also chipped in 11 points.
For Detroit, forward Jasmine Edwards was the primary offensive threat, scoring a game-high 16 points and collecting six rebounds in 37 minutes of action. However, the Titans’ offensive execution was hampered throughout, as evidenced by their 22 turnovers against only five assists as a team. Detroit also struggled from the free-throw line, making just 7 of 17 attempts.
After Toledo’s strong first quarter, the Rockets maintained a 34-22 advantage at halftime. Detroit showed signs of life in the third quarter, outscoring Toledo 17-20, but could not sustain the momentum in the final period. The Rockets’ defense was relentless, recording 15 steals, while their ball movement was crisp, resulting in 15 assists on 23 made field goals.
The win improves Toledo’s record to 1-2 on the young season, while Detroit evens its mark at 1-1. The Rockets will look to build on the victory when they travel to face Northern Kentucky on Wednesday. Detroit returns to action the same day, hosting Central Michigan.
