Toledo Rallies Past Detroit for First Win

TOLEDO, Ohio (Interstat) — In a commanding performance fueled by a dominant first quarter and relentless defensive pressure, the Toledo Rockets defeated the Detroit Titans 66-52 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at Savage Hall.

A crowd of 3,685 watched as the Rockets seized control early, opening the game on a 10-0 run and outscoring the Titans 22-15 in the first quarter. Toledo never relinquished that lead, methodically building upon it throughout the contest to secure their first victory of the season and even their record at one win and two losses. Detroit fell to an even one and one.

The Rockets’ victory was built on efficiency near the basket and capitalizing on opponent mistakes. Toledo outscored Detroit 40-28 in the paint and, more critically, converted 26 points off Titan turnovers while Detroit managed only 10 points off Rocket miscues. This disparity proved to be a decisive factor in the game’s outcome.

Toledo’s offense was a balanced effort, with four players scoring in double figures. Faith Fedd-Robinson, a guard from Newark, New Jersey, led all scorers with 17 points. She was complemented by forward Miriam Diala of Heidelberg, Germany, who posted a strong all-around line of 12 points and eight rebounds. Guard Kendall Carruthers, a Toledo native, added 13 points and six rebounds, while forward Evalyse Cole of Easton, Pennsylvania, chipped in 11 points.

For Detroit, forward Jasmine Edwards was the primary offensive threat, finishing with a team-high 16 points to go with six rebounds in 37 minutes of action. However, the Titans struggled to find consistent scoring beyond Edwards, with no other player reaching double figures. Nisea Burrell, Myonna Hooper and Anna Lassan each contributed seven points.

The game’s trajectory was set from the opening tip. After winning the jump ball, Toledo immediately went to work. Fedd-Robinson and Diala scored consecutive layups to establish an early 4-0 lead. Detroit’s offense sputtered with turnovers on its first two possessions, allowing the Rockets to extend the run. A layup from Carruthers and free throws pushed the advantage to 10-0 before Detroit’s Aaliyah McQueen finally got the Titans on the board with a jumper at the 8:42 mark.

Toledo continued to apply pressure, closing the first quarter with another burst. In the final minute, Fedd-Robinson converted a fast-break layup off an assist from Carruthers with 32 seconds left, giving the Rockets a 22-15 lead after one period.

The Titans’ offensive woes deepened in the second quarter, managing only seven points. Toledo’s defense tightened, forcing several shot-clock violations and difficult attempts. While the Rockets’ own scoring slowed to 12 points in the frame, they still managed to extend their lead to 34-22 heading into halftime.

Detroit showed signs of life after the break, scoring 17 points in the third quarter, but could not significantly cut into the deficit as Toledo answered with 20 points of its own. The Rockets maintained a comfortable double-digit margin throughout the second half, with their lead never dipping below 12 points in the fourth quarter as they closed out the 14-point victory.

The win provides a positive momentum shift for Toledo after opening the season with a close 72-69 loss to Gonzaga and a lopsided 88-51 defeat at Troy. Detroit, coming off a 30-point rout of Valparaiso, was handed its first loss of the young season.

Looking ahead, Detroit will return home to face in-state foe Central Michigan on Wednesday. Toledo hits the road for its next contest, also on Wednesday, against Northern Kentucky.
