New Mexico Lobos Dominate Rival Aggies in Women’s Basketball Showdown

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Interstat) — In a commanding in-state rivalry performance, the New Mexico Lobos women’s basketball team delivered a decisive 77-45 victory over the New Mexico State Aggies on Sunday at the Pan American Center.

The Lobos seized control of the game with a dominant second quarter and never looked back, improving their season record to 4-1. The Aggies, playing in front of a home crowd of 1,408, fell to 1-2 with the loss.

The game was a tale of two halves, but the outcome was largely decided by a staggering second-quarter surge from the visiting Lobos. After a competitive first quarter that ended with New Mexico holding a narrow 10-11 lead, the Lobos exploded for 28 points in the second period while holding the Aggies to a mere four. The 28-4 quarter turned a one-point game into a 38-15 Lobos advantage at halftime, a deficit from which New Mexico State could not recover.

New Mexico’s offensive execution was far superior throughout the contest. The Lobos shot an efficient 53.7 percent from the field, connecting on 29 of their 54 attempts. Their prowess extended beyond the arc, where they hit 10 of 22 three-pointers. In stark contrast, the Aggies struggled mightily with their shooting, finishing the game at just 27 percent from the floor on 17-of-63 shooting. Their long-range game was virtually nonexistent, making only 2 of 14 attempts from three-point territory.

The Lobos also won the battle in the paint, outscoring the Aggies 38-24, and capitalized more effectively on mistakes, scoring 18 points off turnovers compared to the Aggies’ 11.

Individually, the Lobos were led by a balanced and efficient attack. Guard Nayli Padilla, from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain, provided a significant spark off the bench, scoring a team-high 14 points in just 24 minutes of action. She also added six rebounds and three assists, showcasing her all-around game. Forward Cacia Antonio, of Luanda, Angola, was a force inside, recording a double-double with 10 points and seven rebounds, alongside three assists and a block.

Center Clarissa Craig from Cincinnati, Ohio, was a defensive anchor and nearly secured a double-double herself, pulling down eight rebounds and scoring eight points in only 13 minutes of play. The Lobos’ backcourt depth was also on display, with contributions from Alyssa Hargrove of Dayton, Ohio, who scored nine points, and Tyler Jones of Memphis, Tennessee, who dished out a team-high four assists.

For the Aggies, the effort was led by Lucia Yenes of Madrid, Spain, who fought hard for 34 minutes, scoring 11 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Fellow Spaniard Lucia Lara, from Córdoba, added eight points and seven rebounds. Guard Emma Christiano logged heavy minutes and finished with 10 points, three rebounds, and three assists, but the team’s collective offensive struggles were too much to overcome.

The game’s statistical profile highlighted the Lobos’ efficiency. New Mexico scored its 77 points on just 77 possessions, registering an offensive rating of 100.5. The Aggies, meanwhile, managed only 45 points on 80 possessions, resulting in a meager offensive rating of 56.5, underscoring their difficulties in generating productive offense.

Despite committing 23 turnovers, a rare blemish on their performance, the Lobos’ stifling defense forced 18 Aggie turnovers and limited their rivals to single-digit scoring in two of the four quarters.

The victory continues a strong early season for the Lobos, who have now won three straight games after a season-opening loss on the road. The Aggies will look to regroup after a second decisive loss to a Division I opponent this season.
