Penn State at Saint Joseph`s

PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — In a game where they were heavy underdogs, the Penn State Lady Lions used a dominant third-quarter surge to remain undefeated, defeating the Saint Joseph’s Hawks 89-77 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at Hagan Arena.

A crowd of 1,522 saw the Lady Lions improve to 4-0, while the Hawks suffered their first loss of the season, falling to 3-1. The result defied the national statistical projections, which had given Saint Joseph’s a nearly 80 percent probability to win.

The first half was a tightly contested shootout. Saint Joseph’s, fueled by a hot start from Gabby Casey and Aleah Snead, held a narrow 45-47 lead at halftime. The Hawks’ offense was efficient, but Penn State’s high-powered attack, led by center Gracie Merkle and guard Tea Cleante, kept the visitors within striking distance.

The game turned decisively in the third quarter. Penn State’s defense clamped down, holding Saint Joseph’s to just 13 points in the period while its own offense continued to hum. The Lady Lions outscored the Hawks 21-13 in the quarter, seizing a lead they would not relinquish. The run was part of a larger 19-2 stretch that bridged the second and third quarters, completely shifting the game’s momentum.

Penn State’s victory was built on interior dominance and capitalizing on mistakes. The Lady Lions scored 42 points in the paint, more than doubling the Hawks’ total of 20. They also scored 26 points off turnovers, consistently turning Saint Joseph’s miscues into easy baskets on the other end.

Merkle, a 6-foot-6 center from Mount Washington, Kentucky, was the game’s most impactful player. She recorded a double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds in just 27 minutes of play, adding three assists and two blocks. Her presence in the paint was a constant challenge for the Hawks on both ends of the floor.

Cleante, a guard from Laxou, France, was equally formidable, scoring a team-high 23 points while playing a game-high 38 minutes. She added four rebounds and three assists, providing a steady offensive force throughout the contest.

The Lady Lions also received a strong all-around performance from guard Kiyomi McMiller of Silver Spring, Maryland, who posted 15 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Moriah Murray facilitated the offense with six points and eight rebounds while dishing out a team-high six assists. Vitoria Santana provided a key spark off the bench, contributing 11 points.

For Saint Joseph’s, the backcourt duo of Snead and Casey shouldered the offensive load. Snead, a Philadelphia native, scored 21 points and grabbed six rebounds. Casey, from Quakertown, Pennsylvania, led all scorers with 24 points.

Despite the loss, the Hawks hung tough for much of the game, but they had no answer for Penn State’s third-quarter run or its overwhelming advantage in the paint.

Penn State, which has won its first four games by an average of over 19 points, will next travel to Nassau, The Bahamas, to face Princeton on Nov. 22. Saint Joseph’s will look to rebound on the road at Columbia on Nov. 20.
