Radford at Virginia
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (Interstat) — The Virginia women’s basketball team used a dominant rebounding performance and a career day from Tabitha Amanze to cruise past visiting Radford 77-46 in a non-conference game Sunday at John Paul Jones Arena.
Amanze, a 6-foot-4 forward from Ogun, Nigeria, recorded a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Cavaliers. Her presence inside was a primary factor in Virginia’s overwhelming 20-2 advantage in offensive rebounds, which led to numerous second-chance opportunities.
The Cavaliers seized control early, closing the first quarter on a 15-2 run to take a 26-11 lead. The Highlanders struggled to find any offensive rhythm against Virginia’s defense, which registered 11 steals and eight blocks.
Paris Clark complemented Amanze’s performance with 12 points, nine rebounds and two blocks for Virginia. Kymora Johnson facilitated the offense with eight assists, while Romi Levy added seven points and eight rebounds. The Cavaliers shot 45 percent from the floor and made 15 of 20 free throws.
Radford was led by Joi Williams with 10 points. Cate Carlson and Angelina Nice each added nine points for the Highlanders, who shot just 35.8 percent from the field and 25 percent from three-point range. The team’s offensive struggles were encapsulated by an offensive rating of 66.8 points per 100 possessions.
Virginia improved its record to 3-1 with the victory, while Radford fell to 2-3.
The Cavaliers are scheduled to host Longwood on Thursday. Radford returns home to face Furman on Wednesday.
