Texas Christian at North Carolina State
RALEIGH, N.C. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by offensive inefficiency, the Texas Christian Lady Frogs remained undefeated Sunday, grinding out a 69-59 victory over the North Carolina State Wolfpack at Lenovo Center.
The game, played before a crowd of 5,500, saw TCU improve to 4-0 on the young season, while North Carolina State evened its record at 2-2.
Texas Christian seized control of the contest with a dominant third-quarter performance, outscoring the Wolfpack 20-9 to turn a narrow halftime lead into a comfortable advantage. The Lady Frogs entered the final period leading 56-40 and withstood a late push from the home team to secure the win.
The offensive story was one of missed opportunities. Texas Christian scored 69 points on 70 possessions, an offensive rating of 99.0, while North Carolina State was held to just 59 points on 71 possessions, an offensive rating of 82.9. Both teams struggled from the field, with TCU shooting 26 for 61 and the Wolfpack faring worse at 23 for 69.
The Lady Frogs were led by a stellar performance from Marta Suárez. The 6-foot-3 forward from Oviedo, Spain, played 40 minutes and poured in a game-high 26 points, adding three rebounds, an assist and two blocks. Her scoring was crucial in a game where consistent offense was hard to find.
Olivia Miles of Phillipsburg, New Jersey, provided a formidable inside presence for TCU, recording a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds to go along with five assists in 38 minutes. Clara Silva, a 6-foot-7 center from Faro, Portugal, also notched a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, contributing two blocks in 32 minutes of action. Donovyn Hunter rounded out the double-figure scorers for the Lady Frogs with 11 points, five rebounds and three assists.
For North Carolina State, Tilda Trygger, a 6-foot-6 post player from Stockholm, Sweden, led the way with 15 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Destiny Lunan of Goodyear, Arizona, provided a spark off the bench with 10 points, while Zoe Brooks of Plainfield, New Jersey, filled the stat sheet with six points, 10 rebounds and six assists.
The Wolfpack won the battle on the offensive glass, grabbing 13 rebounds to TCU’s 10, but could not convert those extra chances efficiently enough. North Carolina State also committed fewer turnovers, nine to the Lady Frogs’ 13, but TCU’s defense and superior free-throw shooting proved decisive. The Lady Frogs went 10 for 12 from the line, while the Wolfpack managed just 7 for 13.
The loss came despite North Carolina State being a heavy favorite according to statistical projections, which gave the Wolfpack a 76.7 percent probability of victory. The combined score of 128 points fell well under the pregame over/under line of 134.5, underscoring the defensive nature of the contest.
Texas Christian will look to continue its perfect start when it hosts Tarleton State on Thursday. North Carolina State aims to get back on track Wednesday at home against Coastal Carolina.
