Villanova Dominates Marquette in Big East Rematch

BRYN MAWR, Pa. (Interstat) — In a defensive masterclass that suffocated one of the Big East’s more potent offenses, the Villanova Wildcats delivered a decisive 64-39 victory over the Marquette Golden Eagles in a women’s basketball game Sunday at The Pavilion.

The game was never in doubt after a dominant first quarter, as Villanova’s relentless pressure and superior execution at both ends of the floor handed Marquette its third consecutive loss and most lopsided defeat of the season.

Villanova set the tone immediately, opening the game on a 10-0 run before Marquette managed its first field goal nearly four minutes into the contest. The Wildcats’ defense was impenetrable, forcing eight Marquette turnovers in the first quarter alone and holding the Golden Eagles to just five points on 2-of-10 shooting. Villanova led 16-5 after one period and never saw its advantage dip below double digits again.

The most important stretch of the game came early in the second quarter, effectively extinguishing any hope of a Marquette rally. After the Golden Eagles cut the deficit to 16-10 on a Charia Smith layup, Villanova responded with a swift 7-0 burst. The sequence was capped by a Kennedy Henry 3-pointer, assisted by Jasmine Bascoe, pushing the lead back to 23-10. Marquette would get no closer than 11 points the rest of the way, as every mini-run was met with an immediate Villanova counter.

The Wildcats were led by a balanced and efficient offensive attack. Jasmine Bascoe, the sophomore guard from Milton, Canada, orchestrated the offense with 18 points, seven assists and four rebounds. Her backcourt partner, Kennedy Henry of Hockessin, Delaware, added 13 points. The interior was controlled by Denae Carter, a Philadelphia native, who contributed 14 points, five rebounds and two assists.

Villanova’s defensive statistics were staggering. They forced 20 Marquette turnovers, converting them into eight points, and recorded 10 steals and five blocks. The Wildcats held Marquette to a season-worst 31.7% shooting from the field and a paltry 15.4% from 3-point range. Marquette’s offensive rating of 61.3 points per 100 possessions was a testament to the Wildcats’ disruptive game plan.

Marquette, which had defeated Villanova 85-69 in Milwaukee earlier this season, was utterly stifled. The Golden Eagles managed only two assists against their 20 turnovers, highlighting their inability to generate any fluid offense. Halle Vice battled for a near double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds, while Lee Volker led the team with 11 points. But the backcourt combination of Kennedi Perkins and Jaidynn Mason was hounded into a combined 3-of-15 shooting with eight turnovers.

Villanova, meanwhile, shot 43.5% from the field and dominated the paint, outscoring Marquette 44-18 inside. They also shared the ball effectively, tallying 10 assists on 27 made baskets.

With the victory, Villanova improved to 22-6 overall and strengthened its position in the upper tier of the Big East Conference. Marquette fell to 16-11, its postseason aspirations needing a quick turnaround as the regular season winds down.

A crowd of 1,651 at The Pavilion watched Villanova methodically pull away in the second half, leading by as many as 27 points in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats outscored Marquette 21-8 in the final period to seal the emphatic win.

Villanova next travels to face Seton Hall on Thursday. Marquette returns home to host Xavier on Wednesday before a road game at Providence on Sunday.
