Boston University Outlasts Colgate in Overtime Thriller
HAMILTON, N.Y. (Interstat) — Bella McLaughlin scored 22 points, including a crucial three-point play in the final minute of overtime, and Boston University rallied from a late fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Colgate 77-70 in a Patriot League women’s basketball game Wednesday night at Cotterell Court.
The Terriers, who led by as many as 14 points in the first half, saw that advantage evaporate completely in the second half. Colgate took its first lead of the game at 53-50 on an Ella Meabon 3-pointer with 7:34 remaining in regulation and extended it to 64-60 on a Lara Cook triple with 3:16 left.
Boston University responded with a 6-0 run to close the fourth quarter, tying the game at 65 on a driving layup by McLaughlin with four seconds left, forcing overtime after Colgate’s Ella Meabon missed a potential game-winning jumper at the buzzer.
In the extra period, with Boston University clinging to a 71-70 lead, McLaughlin drove the lane, scored through contact and completed the three-point play with 1:07 remaining to push the lead to four. Colgate would not score again, missing its final four field goal attempts as the Terriers sealed the game at the free-throw line.
The most critical sequence of the game unfolded in the final 70 seconds of overtime. After Colgate’s Madison Schiller made one of two free throws to cut the Boston University lead to 71-70, the Terriers worked the clock on the ensuing possession. McLaughlin, a 5-foot-6 guard from Hampden, Maine, attacked the basket against Schiller, scored the layup and drew the foul. Her subsequent free throw provided a crucial two-possession cushion. On Colgate’s next trip, a hurried 3-point attempt by Amarah Streiff missed, and McLaughlin secured the defensive rebound, effectively ending the Raiders’ chances.
McLaughlin added three assists in 31 minutes. She was supported by a double-double from 6-foot-2 forward Anastasiia Semenova of St. Petersburg, Russia, who had 14 points and played a game-high 42 minutes. Inés Monteagudo of Valencia, Spain, contributed 11 points and six assists for the Terriers.
Colgate was led by a game-high 25 points from Ella Meabon of Fairport, New York. Madison Schiller of Wyckoff, New Jersey, added 16 points and six assists in 43 minutes for the Raiders.
Boston University started strong, using an early 9-0 run to build a 17-8 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 39-25 at halftime. The Terriers dominated inside, outscoring Colgate 38-18 in the paint and scoring 16 points off 16 Raiders turnovers.
The momentum shifted dramatically after halftime. Colgate outscored Boston University 40-17 across the third and fourth quarters, fueled by Meabon’s scoring and a tightened defense that held the Terriers to just nine points in the third period.
With the win, Boston University improved to 9-17 overall. Colgate fell to 6-19. An announced crowd of 217 attended the game.
According to Interstat’s ELO system, Colgate had entered the game with a 64.9 percent probability to win.
