Huskies Upset Seawolves in Women’s Basketball Matchup

BOSTON (Interstat) — In a game defined by a stark contrast in offensive efficiency, the Northeastern Huskies overcame a projected underdog status and a standout performance from Stony Brook’s Janay Brantley to secure a 73-60 victory in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Sunday at Matthews Arena.

The most important part of the contest was Northeastern’s sustained and precise offensive execution, which allowed them to build and maintain a lead despite Stony Brook’s relentless effort on the offensive glass. The Huskies shot a blistering 58.5% from the floor and 66.7% from three-point range, turning nearly every possession into a high-quality scoring opportunity. This efficiency proved insurmountable for the Seawolves, who, despite attempting 17 more field goals and grabbing 19 offensive rebounds, could only convert at a 39.7% clip and struggled at the free-throw line.

Northeastern set the tone early. After Justice Tramble won the opening tip and scored the game’s first basket, the Huskies’ shooters quickly found their rhythm. A three-pointer from Morgan Matthews and efficient inside play gave the home team an 18-13 lead after the first quarter. Stony Brook kept pace largely through the dynamic guard tandem of Brantley and Diaka Berete, who combined for all but two of the Seawolves’ first-quarter points.

The second quarter followed a similar pattern. Every time Stony Brook threatened, Northeastern answered with a critical basket. Camryn Collins, the Huskies’ top star, began to impose herself, scoring on drives and facilitating for others. Her layup with 7:23 left in the half pushed the lead to nine points. Brantley, a 6-foot guard from Catskill, New York, tried to will her team back, hitting a trio of three-pointers in the first half to keep the deficit manageable. However, Northeastern closed the half on a 6-0 run, capped by a Tramble layup just before the buzzer, to take a 35-26 lead into the break.

The third quarter saw Northeastern deliver the decisive blow. Leading 42-36, the Huskies unleashed a 14-2 run over a four-minute span. The surge was fueled by their offensive balance: a three-pointer from Collins, a layup by Maya Summerville, a traditional three-point play from Tramble, and capped by a Beatriz Perez Pulgar three-pointer at the quarter horn. That shot extended the lead to 56-39, giving the Huskies their largest advantage and effectively putting the game out of reach.

Stony Brook, to its credit, did not fold. The Seawolves opened the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run, cutting the lead to ten and forcing a Northeastern timeout. But the Huskies’ offense, which had been so fluid all afternoon, responded immediately. Collins silenced the run with a clutch three-pointer, and Yirsy Quéliz added a driving layup to quickly push the lead back to 15. The Seawolves would get no closer than 11 points the rest of the way as Northeastern closed the game at the free-throw line.

Brantley finished with a game-high 26 points, adding four assists and three steals in 36 minutes for Stony Brook. Berete, from Toronto, contributed 19 points. Sandra Frau-Garcia of Pego, Spain, filled the stat sheet with five rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Their efforts, however, were undone by 17 turnovers and the team’s overall shooting struggles.

Northeastern’s victory was a balanced affair. Collins, from Foxboro, Massachusetts, led the Huskies with 21 points, three assists, and two steals, bouncing back from a quiet performance in the teams’ previous meeting. Tramble, a 6-1 forward from Canton, Michigan, was a force inside with 15 points and seven rebounds. Quéliz, the 5-4 guard from the Dominican Republic, orchestrated the offense with 12 points and four assists.

The win improved Northeastern’s record to 7-16 overall, while Stony Brook fell to 14-11. The result avenged a 64-55 loss to the Seawolves just nine days prior on Long Island. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Stony Brook had entered the game with an 85.3% probability to win, making the Huskies’ wire-to-wire performance all the more impressive.

Northeastern next travels to face North Carolina A&T on Friday. Stony Brook returns home to host UNC Wilmington on the same night.
