Navy Women Dominate Colgate in Patriot League Matchup
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Interstat) — The Navy women’s basketball team used a dominant defensive performance and a balanced offensive attack to cruise past Colgate 66-38 in a Patriot League matchup Saturday at Alumni Hall.
The Midshipmen, improving to 18-6 overall, seized control from the opening tip and never relented, holding the Raiders to single-digit scoring in two quarters. Colgate, which fell to 6-18, managed just four points in the first quarter and nine in the second, digging a 35-13 halftime deficit from which it could not recover.
Navy’s defense was the story, forcing 20 Colgate turnovers and converting them into 20 points. The Midshipmen also dominated inside, outscoring the Raiders 40-18 in the paint. Colgate managed only five points off Navy’s miscues.
Zoe Mesuch led all scorers for Navy with 16 points, adding five rebounds. Zanai Barnett-Gay filled the stat sheet with 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists and a block. The Midshipmen’s interior presence was felt throughout, with Morgan Demos and Kate Samson each contributing six points and six and four rebounds, respectively. Maren Louridas also chipped in six points off the bench.
Colgate, which has lost three straight and eight of its last nine, was led by Lara Cook’s eight points. Amarah Streiff finished with five points and a team-high six rebounds, while Christina Midgette pulled down six rebounds.
The game was effectively decided in the first half. After a slow start for both teams, Navy closed the first quarter on a 13-2 run, capped by back-to-back 3-pointers from Mesuch in the final 90 seconds to take a 16-4 lead. The Raiders’ offensive struggles intensified in the second period, as they shot poorly from the field and committed eight turnovers. Navy steadily expanded its lead, with a 3-pointer from Grace Minihane pushing the advantage to 27-13 late in the quarter before the Midshipmen took their 22-point lead into the break.
Colgate showed slightly more rhythm after halftime, scoring 12 points in the third quarter, but could not put together a sustained run to threaten Navy’s commanding lead. The Midshipmen’s margin never dipped below 20 points in the second half, reaching as high as 28 in the final minutes.
The victory keeps Navy near the top of the Patriot League standings, while Colgate remains near the bottom. The teams are scheduled to meet again in Hamilton, New York, on Feb. 28.
An announced crowd of 864 at Alumni Hall watched the contest.
The most important part of the game, based on the play-by-play, was the decisive closing stretch of the first quarter. With Navy leading just 8-2 near the midway point, the Midshipmen closed the period with an 8-2 spurt to establish a double-digit lead. The sequence was highlighted by two critical plays: a steal by Colgate’s Lara Cook followed immediately by her own turnover, squandering a chance to cut into the lead, and then, after a Navy stop, two consecutive 3-pointers by Zoe Mesuch in the final 1:22. The second of those triples beat the quarter buzzer, giving Navy a 16-4 lead and crushing momentum. This burst established the defensive tone and offensive separation that defined the entire game, as Colgate never recovered from the early 12-point deficit.
