Southern Indiana Dominates Southeast Missouri State in Road Victory

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (Interstat) — The Southern Indiana women’s basketball team delivered a dominant wire-to-wire performance Saturday, overwhelming Southeast Missouri State 90-57 in an Ohio Valley Conference matchup at the Show Me Center.

The Screaming Eagles (16-7, 9-3 OVC) seized control from the opening tip, racing to a 25-9 lead after the first quarter and never looking back. Their suffocating defense and efficient offense stifled the Redhawks (8-15, 4-8) throughout, building a lead that swelled to as many as 36 points in the fourth quarter.

The most decisive stretch of the game came immediately after halftime. Leading 42-16 at the break, Southern Indiana extinguished any notion of a Southeast Missouri State rally by opening the third quarter with a 10-2 run. The surge was fueled by interior baskets from Chloe Gannon and a critical three-pointer from Shannon Blacher, pushing the advantage to 52-18 and effectively putting the contest out of reach.

Ali Saunders, Southern Indiana’s leading scorer, spearheaded the offensive onslaught with 19 points and five assists. Her backcourt leadership was instrumental in the Screaming Eagles’ fluid ball movement, which resulted in 11 assists against 19 turnovers. Amiyah Buchanan recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Chloe Gannon added 16 points and six boards.

Southern Indiana’s defensive pressure was relentless, forcing 25 Redhawks turnovers and converting them into 28 points. The Screaming Eagles also owned the glass, grabbing 16 offensive rebounds that led to 18 second-chance points. Offensively, they were exceptionally efficient, shooting 53.3% from the field and a blistering 57.9% from three-point range.

For Southeast Missouri State, Carmen Taylor provided a bright spot with a game-high 21 points, including five three-pointers, with 18 of her points coming in the second half. Ainaya Williams contributed 13 points and six rebounds off the bench. The Redhawks struggled mightily from deep, connecting on just 7 of 31 attempts from beyond the arc, and were hampered by their turnover woes.

The game was a stark reversal from the teams’ first meeting on Jan. 8, which Southern Indiana won 77-46. The Screaming Eagles have now won seven of their last nine games, while the Redhawks have dropped three of their last four.

Southern Indiana’s offensive rating of 124.1 points per 100 possessions underscored its clinical performance, while Southeast Missouri State managed a rating of just 76.4. The Screaming Eagles also dominated points in the paint, 32-24, and capitalized on their free-throw opportunities, making 15 of 20.

A crowd of 925 watched as Southern Indiana methodically built its lead each quarter, scoring 25, 17, 16, and then exploding for 32 points in the final period. Southeast Missouri State showed a flicker of life after halftime, scoring 15 in the third and 26 in the fourth, but the early deficit was far too large to overcome.

Southern Indiana next hosts Tennessee State on Thursday. Southeast Missouri State travels to face SIU Edwardsville the same night.
