Tommies Hold Off Pioneers’ Rally for Summit League Road Victory

DENVER (Interstat) — In a game defined by a chaotic start and a tense finish, the Saint Thomas Tommies survived a furious second-half rally and a staggering 26 turnovers to edge the Denver Pioneers 60-56 in a Summit League women’s basketball contest Saturday at Magness Arena.

The Tommies (11-12, 3-7 Summit) appeared poised for a runaway victory after a dominant first quarter, holding Denver to just six points and building a 14-6 lead. Saint Thomas extended its advantage to 23-9 in the second quarter before the Pioneers (9-15, 3-7) began to chip away, closing the half on a 13-0 run to trail just 23-22 at the break.

Denver’s momentum carried into the third quarter, where they outscored Saint Thomas 25-18. A driving layup by Jocelyn Medina gave the Pioneers their first lead at 42-40 with 2:46 left in the period, capping a 33-17 surge spanning the second and third quarters. Denver took a 47-41 lead into the final frame.

The fourth quarter became a defensive struggle. Saint Thomas, which committed 10 of its turnovers in the period, clawed back with key plays from its veterans. Alyssa Sand, a 6-foot-3 junior from Albany, Minnesota, hit a crucial three-pointer with 6:58 to play, and Abbey Vallance answered a Denver free throw with a three of her own to tie the game at 49 with 5:50 remaining.

With the game tied at 56 and under a minute to play, Sand delivered the decisive basket, converting a layup with 1:24 on the clock to put the Tommies ahead for good. Denver had three opportunities to tie or take the lead in the final minute but came up empty on a missed three-pointer by Coryn Watts and two late turnovers.

Saint Thomas sealed the game at the free-throw line, with Jada Hood making two clutch free throws with 16 seconds left for the final margin.

The Tommies won despite being outscored 22-11 in points off turnovers and giving up 14 more possessions than Denver. They compensated with superior shooting efficiency, hitting 42.5% from the field and 9 of 21 from three-point range, while Denver managed just 34.4% shooting and 5 of 19 from deep. Saint Thomas also made 17 of 20 free throws.

Hood led all scorers with 14 points and added four assists for Saint Thomas. Sand finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and a key block, while Laura Hauge added 12 points. The Tommies’ bench, led by Vallance’s five points, provided critical minutes.

Denver was led by Medina’s 13 points. Laia Monclova of Mallorca, Spain, tallied 11 points and three assists, and Watts finished with eight points and a game-high five assists. The Pioneers’ defense forced 13 steals but could not overcome their own offensive struggles down the stretch.

The victory gave Saint Thomas a regular-season sweep of Denver, having also defeated the Pioneers 74-65 in overtime on Jan. 8. Both teams now sit at 3-7 in conference play.

The most critical sequence of the game occurred in the final 90 seconds with the score tied. After Denver’s Laia Monclova committed a traveling turnover with 1:40 left, Saint Thomas worked the ball inside to Alyssa Sand, who scored the go-ahead layup. On the ensuing possession, Denver’s Jocelyn Medina missed a potential go-ahead three-pointer, and Sand secured the defensive rebound. Following a Saint Thomas turnover, Denver had one final chance, but Coryn Watts’ three-point attempt to tie was off the mark with five seconds left, effectively sealing the Tommies’ narrow road victory.
