Wofford Edges Chattanooga in Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Clash
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Interstat) — In a game defined by precision at the free throw line and a singular, dominant performance, the Wofford Terriers edged the Chattanooga Lady Mocs 67-63 in a Southern Conference women’s basketball clash on Saturday at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
The outcome hinged on two starkly different offensive approaches. Wofford, despite shooting just 42.2% from the field, was flawless on 24 attempts from the charity stripe. Chattanooga, which shot a better 46.3% overall and dominated points in the paint 38-26, went to the line only 13 times, making 10. That 14-point disparity at the foul line proved the decisive margin in a tense, four-point contest.
The game’s central figure was Wofford guard Gabby Mundy. The sophomore from Liberty Hill, Texas, delivered a career-defining performance, scoring a game-high 32 points on 10-of-22 shooting. She was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line, added five rebounds, three assists and three steals in 37 minutes. Her scoring outburst was particularly crucial for a Terriers team that had lost two straight close games and was seeking to level its conference record.
Chattanooga was led by the dynamic play of guard Caia Elisaldez. The Whittier, California native countered with 24 points, three rebounds and two assists, playing all but 20 seconds of the contest. The Lady Mocs also got a strong interior contribution from Izzy McPherson, who added 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting.
The most critical sequence of the game unfolded in the final minute with Wofford clinging to a 65-63 lead. After a Mundy layup extended the Terriers’ lead to four with 54 seconds left, Chattanooga’s Elisaldez answered with a layup of her own seven seconds later to cut the deficit back to two. Following a Wofford timeout, the Lady Mocs forced a turnover when Gianna Corbitt stole the ball from Queen Ikhiuwu with 27 seconds remaining, giving Chattanooga a chance to tie or take the lead.
The ensuing possession, however, ended in disaster for the visitors. Corbitt drove into traffic and had the ball stripped by Ikhiuwu, who immediately called timeout for Wofford with 21 seconds on the clock. After the stoppage, Chattanooga was forced to foul. Mundy was sent to the line with seven seconds remaining and calmly sank both free throws to seal the victory, extending the lead to two possessions and effectively ending the game.
The contest was a defensive struggle early, with both teams committing a combined 28 turnovers. Wofford built its largest lead of the game, 37-25, late in the second quarter behind a 21-point frame. Chattanooga chipped away throughout the second half, using an 18-point third quarter to close the gap and setting up the frantic final period where neither team led by more than four points.
Wofford improved to 12-11 overall and 4-4 in Southern Conference play. Chattanooga, which had won six of its last seven games entering the contest, fell to 16-6 and 6-2 in the league. The victory avenged a 61-42 loss to the Lady Mocs in Chattanooga just one month prior.
Statistically, Wofford’s efficiency told the story. The Terriers scored 67 points on just 64 possessions for an offensive rating of 104.0, while Chattanooga managed 63 points on 69 possessions for a rating of 91.1. Wofford’s eight offensive rebounds to Chattanooga’s three also provided key second-chance opportunities.
Mundy’s 32-point effort followed recent performances of 18 and 19 points, signaling her ascent as a primary scorer for the Terriers. For Chattanooga, the loss snapped a three-game winning streak and created a tighter race atop the conference standings.
Wofford next travels to face UNC Greensboro on Thursday. Chattanooga returns home to host East Tennessee State next Saturday.
