Bucknell Rallies Past Colgate for Patriot League Road Win

HAMILTON, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined more by missed shots than made ones, the Bucknell Bison grinded out a 50-41 victory over the Colgate Raiders in a Patriot League women’s basketball game Saturday at Cotterell Court.

The game, witnessed by 381 fans, saw both teams combine to shoot just 30 of 107 from the field, a frigid 28 percent. Despite the offensive woes, Bucknell used a methodical, quarter-by-quarter effort to overcome a disastrous start and secure its third consecutive conference win, improving to 8-14 overall. Colgate, which led by 10 points after the first quarter, fell to 6-16.

The most important part of the game was Bucknell’s suffocating defensive response after the first quarter. Colgate raced out to a 21-11 lead after the opening period, spearheaded by early baskets from Grace Klag and Madison Schiller. The Raiders’ offense, however, completely evaporated over the next two quarters. Bucknell’s defense tightened, holding Colgate to just seven points in the second quarter and a mere three points in the third. The Raiders’ 10-point output across the middle 20 minutes allowed the Bison to steadily erase the deficit and build a lead they would not relinquish.

Bucknell’s offense, while far from efficient, proved just potent enough. After scoring exactly 11 points in each of the first three quarters, the Bison posted 17 in the fourth to seal the game. Reese Zemitis, a 6-foot sophomore from Langhorne, Pennsylvania, led all scorers with 11 points, adding six rebounds and two blocks. Anna Kunzwiler of Leesburg, Virginia, played a team-high 37 minutes, contributing eight points, six rebounds and four assists.

The Bison won despite being outrebounded 44-36 overall and 14-10 on the offensive glass. They countered by forcing 15 Colgate turnovers, converting them into eight points, and by scoring 20 points in the paint to Colgate’s 12. Desirae Ashton provided a key spark off the bench for Bucknell, scoring seven points and grabbing eight rebounds in just 19 minutes, including a critical three-point play late in the fourth quarter that helped stifle Colgate’s final push.

Colgate was led by Tatiana Matthews, who came off the bench to score 10 points. Ella Meabon of Fairport, New York, tallied eight points, six rebounds and five assists. Grace Klag, a 6-foot-2 sophomore from Westfield, New Jersey, was a force on the boards with 10 rebounds and added seven points and two blocks, but the Raiders could not sustain their early momentum.

Statistically, the game was a mirror image in many categories. Both teams finished with nine assists, nine steals, and committed 15 turnovers. The difference came down to slightly better shooting from distance by Bucknell, which hit 7 of 22 three-point attempts compared to Colgate’s 5 of 18, and the Bison’s ability to generate a modest offensive flow during the game’s decisive middle stretch.

The victory extends Bucknell’s recent positive run in Patriot League play following wins over American and Boston University. Colgate, which was projected as a solid favorite by advanced metrics entering the contest, has now lost two straight.

Bucknell next travels to face Navy on Wednesday. Colgate returns to Cotterell Court to host Holy Cross, also on Wednesday.
