Stony Brook Holds Off Northeastern Rally for Home Victory
STONY BROOK, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Stony Brook Seawolves weathered a furious second-half rally from the Northeastern Huskies before pulling away late for a 64-55 victory in a Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball game Friday night at Island Federal Credit Union Arena.
A crowd of 630 saw the home team improve to 13-10 overall while Northeastern fell to 6-14.
The game’s decisive stretch came in the final minutes after the Huskies, who trailed by as many as 20 points in the first half, had clawed back to within a single possession. With Stony Brook leading 59-56 and under four minutes to play, the Seawolves’ defense clamped down, holding Northeastern scoreless for over three minutes while executing a critical sequence to secure the win.
After a missed Northeastern three-pointer, Stony Brook’s Janay Brantley connected on a corner three-pointer off an assist from Sandra Frau-Garcia to push the lead to 62-56 with 1:53 remaining. Following a Huskies turnover, the Seawolves forced two more empty possessions and Brantley, fouled in the closing seconds, sank two free throws to provide the final margin.
The most important part of the game was unquestionably Stony Brook’s dominant first-half performance, which built a cushion substantial enough to survive Northeastern’s explosive third quarter. The Seawolves opened the game on a 13-2 run, fueled by early three-pointers from Diaka Berete and Chloe Oliver. They stifled the Huskies’ offense completely in the second quarter, holding Northeastern to just six points on 2-of-14 shooting from the floor. By halftime, Stony Brook led 36-17, having forced 12 Huskies turnovers and converted them into 14 points.
Northeastern, however, refused to capitulate. The Huskies erupted for 26 points in the third quarter, nearly doubling their first-half output. Justice Tramble and Yirsy Quéliz spearheaded the charge, attacking the basket relentlessly. A 14-2 run spanning the third and fourth quarters, capped by a Quéliz layup, brought Northeastern within three points at 50-47 with 8:11 to play. The Huskies’ defense, leveraging a full-court press, forced Stony Brook into 22 turnovers for the game.
But the Seawolves responded each time the lead was threatened. Frau-Garcia, the team’s primary ball-handler, steadied the offense down the stretch despite committing eight turnovers. Her driving layup with 6:35 left halted the Huskies’ major run, and her assist on Brantley’s late three-pointer effectively sealed the outcome.
Statistically, the game was a contrast in efficiency. Stony Brook shot 41.5% from the field and 31.8% from three-point range, while Northeastern managed just 38.3% overall and 25% from deep. The Seawolves also held a significant advantage at the free-throw line, making 13 of 17 attempts compared to Northeastern’s 6 of 10. The Huskies won the battle inside, outscoring Stony Brook 36-24 in the paint, but were ultimately undone by their slow start and 15 turnovers of their own.
Quéliz led Northeastern with 13 points, while Tramble and Camryn Collins each added 10. For Stony Brook, Frau-Garcia finished with 12 points and five assists. Brantley posted 13 points and three assists, and Oliver contributed 12 points. Berete added 10 points off the bench.
The game was a tale of two halves, with Stony Brook’s early defensive intensity and Northeastern’s resilient comeback attempt defining the narrative. In the end, the Seawolves’ poise in the final four minutes and their ability to deliver key shots when needed proved the difference.
Northeastern will look to rebound quickly, traveling to face Towson on Sunday. Stony Brook continues its homestand, next hosting Monmouth on Feb. 13. The two teams are scheduled for a rematch in Boston just two days later.
