Lady Colonels Use Defense to Secure Road Win Over Bisons
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by pressure and missed opportunities, the Eastern Kentucky Lady Colonels grinded out a 61-55 victory over the Lipscomb Bisons in an ASUN Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night at Allen Arena.
The game, played before an announced crowd of 794, was far from an offensive showcase. Both teams combined to shoot under 35% from the field and a dismal 7 for 44 from three-point range. The difference was Eastern Kentucky’s relentless defensive activity, which generated 20 Lipscomb turnovers and converted them into 23 crucial points. The Lady Colonels also dished out 17 assists on their 20 made field goals, demonstrating a level of offensive cohesion that Lipscomb, with only eight assists, could not match.
Eastern Kentucky, which improved to 20-4 overall and solidified its position atop the conference, never trailed after the opening minutes but could never fully shake the persistent Bisons. The Lady Colonels led 14-12 after a disjointed first quarter and extended their advantage to 27-21 at halftime, holding Lipscomb to just nine points in the second period.
The most important sequence of the game arrived late in the third quarter, with Eastern Kentucky clinging to a narrow lead. Leading 37-31 with under three minutes to play in the period, the Lady Colonels unleashed a decisive 9-2 run to close the quarter. The surge was fueled by their defensive identity. It began with a steal by Althea Kara Angeles, leading to a transition layup. After a Lipscomb miss, Ndidiamaka Ndukwe drew a foul and sank two free throws. Following another defensive stop, Liz Freihofer buried a three-pointer, and after a Lipscomb turnover, Angeles scored again in the paint just before the buzzer. That flurry, turning a six-point game into a 46-33 lead heading to the fourth, provided the cushion Eastern Kentucky would ultimately need.
Lipscomb, which fell to 8-14, mounted a final charge in the closing minutes. Trailing 53-47 with under a minute to play, the Bisons forced a turnover and McKayla Miller converted a layup to cut the deficit to four with 42 seconds left. After an Eastern Kentucky timeout, the Bisons fouled Joseana Vaz, who made one of two free throws. On the ensuing possession, Lipscomb’s Taylor Bowen scored on an offensive putback while being fouled with 27 seconds left. Her completed three-point play brought Lipscomb within three points at 56-53, applying significant pressure.
Eastern Kentucky’s composure was tested in the final half-minute. Angeles was fouled and made one of two free throws with 21 seconds left for a four-point lead. Lipscomb had a chance to cut into it, but Hope Counts’ potential game-tying three-point attempt was blocked by Freihofer. Angeles then secured the victory by making two more free throws with seven seconds remaining to establish the final margin.
Kenleigh Woods led Eastern Kentucky with 14 points, including a critical three-pointer in the fourth quarter to stem a Lipscomb run. Ndidiamaka Ndukwe provided a significant spark off the bench with 13 points, while Joseana Vaz added 12. The Lady Colonels’ defense was anchored by Liz Freihofer, who filled the stat sheet with six points, three assists, three blocks, and a game-high three steals, consistently impacting the game on that end of the floor.
Lipscomb was led by McKayla Miller’s game-high 18 points, though she was harassed into six turnovers. Molly Heard contributed 11 points for the Bisons, who struggled to find any consistent offensive rhythm against Eastern Kentucky’s swarming defense.
The victory marks Eastern Kentucky’s eighth consecutive win and completes a regular-season sweep of Lipscomb, having also defeated the Bisons 69-60 in Richmond on Jan. 15. The Lady Colonels will look to continue their momentum at home against Austin Peay on Saturday. Lipscomb will aim to regroup on the road at Central Arkansas, also on Saturday.
