Army Dominates Colgate in Patriot League Women’s Basketball

WEST POINT, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Army women’s basketball team delivered a commanding defensive performance, overwhelming Colgate from the opening tip and cruising to a 59-35 victory in a Patriot League matchup Wednesday afternoon at Christl Arena.

The Black Knights, improving to 17-5 overall and solidifying their position near the top of the conference, never trailed. They established control with a 17-7 first quarter and stretched the lead to 38-15 by halftime, effectively deciding the contest long before the final buzzer sounded before an announced crowd of 2,230.

The most pivotal stretch of the game occurred in the second quarter, where Army transformed a competitive start into a decisive rout. Leading 17-9 after the first period, the Black Knights opened the second with a relentless 21-6 run. The surge was fueled by stifling defense that forced a series of Colgate turnovers and missed shots, coupled with efficient offense at the other end.

Army guard Reese Ericson of Lake Oswego, Oregon, ignited the run with a 3-pointer just 28 seconds into the quarter. Following a Colgate layup, Army scored 12 unanswered points. Camryn Tade of Southlake, Texas, converted a layup, Kya Smith of Lubbock, Texas, hit two free throws, and Soleil Montrose of Irvine, California, capped the decisive burst with a 3-pointer off an Ericson assist to push the lead to 33-11. The Black Knights held Colgate to just eight points in the quarter, taking a 38-15 advantage into the locker room.

Army’s defense was the story, generating 13 steals and forcing 21 Colgate turnovers, which they converted into 15 points. The Black Knights also dominated inside, outscoring Colgate 28-16 in the paint. Offensively, Army shared the ball effectively, tallying 13 assists on 19 made field goals.

Reganne Reardon, a 6-foot-1 forward from Chicago, anchored the defensive effort with a game-high 12 rebounds in just 20 minutes of play. Taylor Wilson of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, filled the stat sheet with 7 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, a block and a steal. Smith led a balanced Army scoring attack with 9 points, while Tade added 10 points and Montrose chipped in 5.

Colgate, which fell to 6-15, struggled mightily on offense throughout. The Raiders shot just 28.9% from the field and 14.3% from 3-point range. Their offensive rating of 54.5 points per 100 possessions underscored the difficulty of operating against Army’s pressure.

Madison Schiller of Wyckoff, New Jersey, led Colgate with 8 rebounds and 5 points in 32 minutes. Tatiana Matthews of Dunnellon, Florida, and Grace Klag of Westfield, New Jersey, each scored 9 points to share team-high honors. Klag also pulled down 5 rebounds.

The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Army, which defeated Colgate 81-49 on Jan. 3. The Black Knights have now won eight of their last ten games. Colgate, meanwhile, has lost four of its last five.

Army’s consistent performance across both halves prevented any chance of a Colgate rally. After the explosive second quarter, the Black Knights maintained their defensive intensity, limiting the Raiders to 8 points in the third quarter. Colgate managed a game-high 12 points in the fourth quarter against Army’s reserves, but the outcome was long since decided.

The game unfolded as projected by advanced metrics, with Interstat’s ELO system giving Army a 90% probability to win. The Black Knights lived up to that billing with a comprehensive performance that highlighted their defensive prowess and balanced scoring.

Army looks to continue its strong conference play when it travels to face Lafayette on Saturday. Colgate returns home to host Bucknell, also on Saturday, seeking to snap its two-game skid.
