Preview: Western Michigan Broncos at Ohio Bobcats
ATHENS, Ohio (Interstat) — The Ohio Bobcats look to rebound from a disappointing road loss when they host the struggling Western Michigan Broncos in a Mid-American Conference women’s basketball matchup Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.
Ohio (12-8 overall) enters the contest after a 90-70 defeat at Miami (Ohio) on Saturday, a game in which the Bobcats allowed a season-high in points. Prior to that, they had won three of their previous four, including an impressive 82-57 road victory at Bowling Green. The Bobcats have been strong at home this season, boasting a 7-2 record in Athens.
The Bobcats are led by versatile forward Elli Garnett, who is coming off a 15-point, 8-rebound performance in the loss to Miami. Garnett has been a key contributor, scoring 19 points in a win over Eastern Michigan earlier in January. Her ability to impact the game both inside and on the perimeter will be central to Ohio’s efforts.
Western Michigan (6-13) snapped a five-game losing streak with a 59-54 win at Eastern Michigan on Saturday. The victory was just the Broncos’ second in their last ten outings. Guard Kailey Starks powered the win with 19 points, continuing a stretch of high-scoring performances. Over her last seven games, Starks has averaged over 14 points per contest, including three games of 19 or more points.
Despite Starks’ recent surge, the Broncos have struggled offensively, failing to reach 60 points in five of their last seven games. They will need a balanced effort similar to Saturday’s, where Alli Carlson recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Historically, the Convocation Center has been a tough venue for visitors, and Ohio will be favored to protect its home court. The Bobcats’ offense, which averages over 74 points per game, will test a Western Michigan defense that allows an average of 64 points.
Wednesday’s game tips off a critical stretch for both teams as they navigate the second half of the MAC schedule. For Ohio, it’s a chance to solidify its standing in the upper half of the conference. For Western Michigan, it represents an opportunity to build momentum from its recent win and pull off a significant road upset.
