Ohio Bobcats Dominate Western Michigan Broncos in MAC Women’s Basketball
ATHENS, Ohio (Interstat) — The Ohio Bobcats delivered a dominant defensive performance, forcing 30 turnovers and holding the Western Michigan Broncos to a season-low in points during a 76-37 victory in a Mid-American Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.
The game was effectively decided in a lopsided first half. Ohio’s relentless pressure overwhelmed Western Michigan from the opening tip, sparking a 25-8 first-quarter run that set the tone. The Bobcats extended their lead to 47-14 by halftime, capitalizing on 19 Broncos turnovers in the first 20 minutes alone. Western Michigan’s 14 first-half points marked a profound offensive struggle against Ohio’s active defense, which recorded 13 steals for the game.
The most important sequence of the game came early in the first quarter, immediately establishing Ohio’s control. After Western Michigan’s Alli Carlson opened the scoring with a jump shot, the Bobcats responded with a decisive 18-2 run over the next five minutes. The surge was fueled by defensive havoc. Ohio forced five Western Michigan turnovers during the stretch, including three consecutive miscues by the Broncos that led directly to transition opportunities. Elli Garnett, who led all scorers with 15 points, was central to the run, scoring seven points during the burst, including a 3-pointer that pushed the lead to 10-2. The Broncos never recovered from the early deficit, failing to score more than 12 points in any quarter.
Ohio’s offensive efficiency, posting an offensive rating of 103.1 on 74 possessions, contrasted sharply with Western Michigan’s frigid shooting. The Broncos managed just 14 field goals on 48 attempts, a 29.2 percent clip, and connected on only 3 of 22 from 3-point range. Their offensive rating of 50.2 underscored the difficulty of generating clean looks against the Bobcats’ defense.
Beyond Garnett, Ohio received balanced scoring. Bailey Tabeling added 13 points, while Aliah McWhorter contributed nine points and three of Ohio’s 13 steals. The Bobcats also shot 44 percent from the floor and made 11 3-pointers.
Western Michigan, which entered the game having won two of its last three, was led by Mary Clare Brusek’s 10 points and Kailey Starks’ 12 points. But the Broncos’ 30 turnovers, leading to numerous easy Ohio baskets, proved insurmountable.
With the win, Ohio improves to 13-8 overall and solidifies its position in the MAC. Western Michigan falls to 6-14 and will look to regroup before its next contest. The Bobcats’ victory exceeded the pregame projections from Interstat’s ELO system, which gave them a 71.1 percent probability to win.
Ohio next hosts Old Dominion in non-conference action on Saturday. Western Michigan returns home to face South Alabama, also on Saturday.
